Position Summary:

The Medical Director for South End Primary Care provides clinical and administrative leadership for primary care at the Washington Street and Hass Center sites. The role oversees adult, family, and pediatric care and integrated specialty services, and partners with substance use disorder and integrated behavioral health teams. The Medical Director supports and develops providers, advances quality and patient safety, and works with operations leaders to keep care consistent and accessible. The role reports to the Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Officer and includes a clinical practice.

In collaboration with the South End Primary Care leadership team, the Medical Director is responsible for:

  • Collaborating closely with the South End Primary Care leadership team and ensuring timely and ongoing communication among leadership and departmental staff

  • Administrative and clinical development of medical staff in South End Primary Care

  • Overseeing and optimizing patient safety and patient experience

  • Recruiting and orienting new physicians and advanced practice providers

  • Developing departmental continuing education presentations

  • Supporting, mentoring, and overseeing primary care clinicians (physicians, NPs, and PAs) across adult medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and women’s health

  • Overseeing and partnering with integrated specialty services at South End Primary Care, which may change over time (currently hepatology and nephrology)

  • Developing and updating departmental clinical policies and procedures

  • Overseeing clinical quality management of the department

  • Assisting the department in annual performance improvement projects

  • Collaborating with the IT department for data reporting and validating IT reports

  • Working closely with coding and billing departments to ensure accurate coding

  • Managing complex and sensitive situations with patients, families, and staff, including complaints, difficult clinical cases, family concerns, and staff conflicts

  • Leading or taking part in root cause analyses (RCAs) and safety reviews, and following through on action plans

  • Teaching and supervising learners in clinic, including medical students, as needed

  • Serving as a two-way link between site staff and senior leadership: explaining organizational decisions and priorities to staff, and bringing staff concerns and ideas to leadership in a clear, organized way

  • Advocating for staff and patients and giving honest feedback, while understanding that many requests take time or cannot be met, and closing the loop with staff on the outcome

  • Partnering closely with teams that share our South End sites but have their own leadership, including substance use disorder (SUD) services and integrated behavioral health (IBH), to coordinate care for shared patients

  • Advocating for South End providers, staff, and patients within NeighborHealth, and helping ensure both sites have the resources and services they need to deliver high-quality care

  • Partnering with operations leaders to align clinical and operational goals, and helping the team understand the broader context behind decisions

  • Leading collaboratively by engaging providers and staff in identifying challenges and shaping solutions

  • Supporting provider well-being, professional satisfaction, and a sustainable workload

  • Bringing new ideas and programs that improve services and care for South End patients

  • Performing panel and access maintenance for the department

Educational Requirements

  • MD or DO, board certified in Family Medicine (strongly preferred) or Internal Medicine

  • Family Medicine is strongly preferred to match the South End’s patients and services. Physicians certified in Internal Medicine with strong leadership experience will also be considered.

  • Current license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Experience Requirements

  • Leadership experience, formal or informal (for example, leading a committee, a QI project, or a clinical team; teaching or supervising learners; or serving as a clinical champion)

  • Broad primary care clinical skills

  • Comfort using data to understand and improve patient care

  • Working knowledge of an electronic health record (Epic preferred)

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills

  • Ability to raise concerns constructively and to compromise when needed

  • Comfortable being assertive and working across departments to get things done for the clinic

Preferred Experience

  • Experience leading change or process improvement work

  • Experience with performance dashboards and data analysis tools

  • Experience in a community health center or with underserved communities

  • Experience in an integrated, team-based clinic, including behavioral health and case management

  • Experience starting new programs or bringing new ideas to life (grant-writing experience is a plus)

Salary

  • Salary: from $235,000 to $300,000 based on years of experience.
