Full job description

Description

We are looking for an innovative leader to join Amazon's WWGS retail and industrial development team who is passionate about reducing the environmental impact of the buildings that serve our customers. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of sustainable building practices, carbon accounting, and their application in retail and grocery industrial environments. This position will be responsible for defining sustainable buildings strategy, embedding the Sustainable Building Standard (SBS) into design standards, and leading retrofits and pilots that reduce carbon and water use. You will also own carbon tracking and reporting, from abatement calculations to embodied carbon and bi-annual forecasts.

This position will be part of an exciting, fast-moving business unit, where everyone on the team needs to be entrepreneurial, wear many hats and work effectively in a highly collaborative environment. You will drive initiatives through design, construction, critical infrastructure and operations teams, and translate Worldwide Sustainability goals into WWGS strategy. You are the right person for this job if you prioritize real decarbonization over offsets and have a passion for producing high-quality, data-driven work. You must take ownership of your work, display a great deal of initiative, possess common sense, sound judgment, and a sense of humor.

Key job responsibilities

  • Define and drive the sustainable buildings strategy for WWGS. Put decarbonization ahead of offsets, in line with the Climate Pledge.

  • Build the Sustainable Building Standard (SBS) into design standards, specifications and reference documents for every building type and project stage. Track and report SBS compliance for new sites, both at design and at construction complete.

  • Lead strategy for sustainable retrofit projects and high-value pilots that cut carbon emissions and water use. Pilots should be pay for themselves through positive lifecycle value.

  • Do the carbon emissions and abatement calculations, the yearly carbon modeling of each building type, and the building carbon forecasts twice a year. Track embodied carbon for construction materials in EC3.

  • Back up sustainability claims for Amazon's annual sustainability reporting. Analyze project and material data to make sure it is accurate and complete.

  • Build partnerships with Design, Construction, Critical Infrastructure, Procurement and Operations teams. Use those partnerships to build sustainability into their processes and tools, and to coordinate data collection, such as Bills of Materials.

  • Turn Worldwide Sustainability (WWS) guidance and mandates into WWGS plans and initiatives. Respond to pan-Amazon and S-team requests about sustainable buildings.

  • Manage workstreams and track progress on carbon, water and SBS goals. Report status, blockers and help needed through monthly and quarterly business reviews.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of experience working in sustainability reporting, sustainability assurance, sustainability compliance or legal fields.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in project management and stakeholder engagement, with the proven track record to build stakeholder engagement plans, set clear expectations, and engage cross-functional partners to drive timely, high-quality outcomes.

  • Proven track record of analyzing and synthesizing large volumes of qualitative and quantitative data to produce external reports or disclosures in alignment with specific reporting criteria.

  • Experience in performing human rights impact assessments or value chain mapping across a large multinational organization to inform sustainability disclosures.

  • Deep understanding of the sustainability regulatory landscape.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Sustainability reporting accreditation/certification (e.g. GRI Certified Sustainability Professional, ISSB (IFRS) Sustainability Fundamentals Certificate).

  • Experience directly performing independent third-party assurance or managing external audit firms.

  • Experience designing and implementing data collection processes across complex global supply chains involving multiple tiers of suppliers and diverse operational contexts.

  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Tableau, Power BI) to synthesize and present sustainability performance data to diverse audiences.
