THE POSITION

Become a Tunnel Maintainer with the Department of Transportation and take on work that keeps vital roadways open and safe! This job places you at the center of important operations that help drivers and emergency crews when they need it most. You will stay active, learn valuable skills, and support daily travel for thousands of people. It is a rewarding role where your efforts help protect and serve your community!

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the safe and efficient movement of traffic through tunnels and nearby roadways by managing incidents, maintaining facilities, and monitoring conditions. As a Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform the following duties:

  • Incident Response:Respond to traffic incidents, as well as assist motorists and first responders using tools, fire extinguishers, and equipment to restore normal traffic flow

  • Tunnel Maintenance:Complete routine and emergency upkeep such as cleaning drainage systems, sweeping facilities, painting structures, and removing debris

  • Condition Monitoring:Observe tunnel traffic, carbon monoxide levels, fire risks, and other abnormal situations to maintain safety

  • Communication Skills:Use clear communication with coworkers and first responders by phone, radio, and in person to maintain awareness

  • HOV Operations:Patrol high occupancy vehicle lanes, assist motorists, control traffic, and manually operate gates during opening and closing procedures

  • Towing Tasks:Operate towing equipment to move disabled vehicles safely using hydraulic controls, chains, and slings

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Seasonal, full-time employment

  • Work hours are varied and are based upon operational considerations. Shifts can range from the following, with a 30-minute lunch:

  • 9:30 PM to 5:30 AM

  • 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM

  • 1:30 PM to 9:30 PM

  • Travel, overtime and shift work required.

  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.

  • All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.

  • All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.

  • All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.

  • All positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
