THE POSITION

Join the Department of Transportation as a Tunnel Maintainer and help keep traffic flowing smoothly and safely. This position allows you to take part in meaningful work that supports public safety across busy travel corridors. You will grow your knowledge while handling a wide range of tunnel and roadway conditions. Your efforts will make a strong difference for thousands of daily travelers.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on keeping tunnel facilities safe, clean, and fully operational while supporting incident response and traffic management. As a Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform the following duties:

  • Tunnel Maintenance:Perform routine cleaning, repair, and upkeep of tunnel structures and surrounding grounds

  • Incident Response:Assist motorists and first responders, remove debris, and restore safe traffic conditions

  • Traffic Monitoring:Observe tunnel conditions, traffic flow, and safety indicators to identify issues

  • Work Zone Setup:Deploy cones, signs, and barriers to set up safe work zones

  • Equipment Operation:Operate trucks, washing equipment, towing apparatus, and flood gates safely

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time position within a rotating 24/7 operational environment.

  • Work hours vary based on operational needs. Shifts can range from the following and will include a 30-minute lunch:

  • 9:30 PM–5:30 AM

  • 5:30 AM–1:30 PM

  • 1:30 PM–9:30 PM

  • Travel and overtime are required.

  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position .

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,141 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work ;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training .

Special Requirements:

  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.

  • All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.

  • All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.

  • All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.

  • Positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
