Job Description

BAE Systems has an immediate need for a highly qualified On-site Systems Engineer to support our work as a prime contractor on the US Navy s Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Sea-Launched Cruise Missile-Nuclear (SLCM-N) Program. The candidate will have extensive knowledge and understanding of Systems Engineering for complex system of systems to successfully deliver major programs in alignment with the DoD 5000 Acquisition framework.

The OnSite Systems Engineer provides authoritative systems engineering and integration expertise across the SLCM-N portfolio. The role supports the chief engineer customer as an embedded technical representative with technical branches, ensuring successful integration of complex strategic weapon system elements. This role ensures subsystem elements are synthesized into a coherent system architecture that meets requirements and preserves SSP mission design principles. The engineer will interface daily with government, BAE Systems, and prime contractor personnel. The On-site Systems Engineer will assist in the development of instructions and guidance to execute systems engineering management functions to support Systems Engineering Technical Review (SETR) milestone event planning and execution. This role involves facilitating critical acquisition milestones, ensuring compliance with exit/entry criteria, and providing expert analysis to minimize technical risk at the system level.

The On-site Systems Engineer will report to the Systems Engineering Supervisor for SLCM-N Technical Planning and Execution and will be onsite with the subsystem technical branch representatives. This role will provide expert technical guidance and system perspective to multidisciplinary teams (Requirements, Architecture, Verification, Integration, Test, Safety, Cybersecurity, etc.) to ensure seamless integration and interoperability of strategic deterrence components and subsystems.

Key responsibilities of the On-site Systems Engineer include, but are not limited to:

Technical Oversight and Integration:

  • Advising and overseeing technical branches and prime contractors on systems engineering activities across the full acquisition lifecycle, from concept and requirements definition through design, development, testing, deployment, and sustainment for DoD/DoW programs.

  • Support and coordinate technical reviews, leveraging training and experience to provide informed analysis and recommendations.

  • Collaborate with engineering, logistics, testing, and contracting teams to ensure a comprehensive technical analysis and evaluation is performed.

  • Utilize various digital engineering tools to evaluate and integrate sub-system content with system-level requirements and architecture (functional and physical).

  • Support the development and maintenance of program documentation, technical assessments (e.g., SRRs, PDRs, Milestone A, and other reviews), and decision memos.

  • Participate in subsystem SETR events to identify system impacts and facilitate working groups to resolve technical issues.

Risk Management:

  • Collaborate with subsystem prime contractors to identify, track, and resolve system-level risks, issues, and opportunities.

  • Perform technical risk assessments, identify potential risks (and opportunities), and establish comprehensive mitigation strategies for critical systems.

  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to implement mitigation strategies for identified risks.

Documentation:

  • Manage program documentation, ensuring white papers, status briefings, and technical assessments remain accurate and accessible.

  • Support the configuration management and change management of program artifacts and documentation through change control boards (CCB) and engineering change processes (ECP).

About the program

Our organization has supported the U.S. Navy s PAE Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) continually since the program s inception in the 1950s. SSP developed the first sea-based, underwater-launched Strategic Weapon System (SWS), a defense system that is truly critical to our national security. For more than six decades, SSP has maintained and upgraded this weapon system, and we have been there every step of the way. The sea-based SWS is the ultimate stealthy weapon system and is the first leg of the U.S. nuclear triad. With over 70% of our nation s nuclear arsenal under its control, its importance in maintaining world peace cannot be overstated. The development of Columbia, the most advanced nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed submarine ever designed, as well the next D5LE2 weapon system is under way and will begin to be rolled out over the next decade. The Navy projects this system to be operational through 2084, meaning the program will have a total life span of more than 120 years. This is a unique program and BAE Systems employees on this program understand they are part of an important legacy.

In response to global threats, SSP is continuing to defend our nation by adding a second nuclear defense system option to their mission responsibilities with the SLCM-N Program. SSP is building this modular, survivable cruise missile system that will be outfitted on some submarines and surface ships. SSP is responsible for designing, developing, building, and deploying the SLCM-N, while BAE Systems supports our customer in the pre-development activities for the SLCM-N Program.

As a decades-long, sole-source partner on multiple contracts on behalf of our customer, our program offers remarkable stability while simultaneously experiencing significant growth. Combined, these factors provide ample opportunity for professional growth and development for capable and talented individuals on our team. BAE Systems, Inc. is the wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of BAE Systems plc.

BAE Systems plc provides some of the world's most advanced, technology-led defense, aerospace, and security solutions. As one of the top ten defense contractors, we employ a skilled workforce of around 100,000 people in more than 40 countries. We develop, engineer, manufacture, and support products and systems to protect national security and keep people safe.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

  • 4 years of relative experience in systems engineering or related STEM field within a DoD/DoW environment

  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, processes, and methodologies. This includes requirements management, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), risk management, configuration management, and architecture development

  • In depth knowledge of strategic deterrence concepts, systems, and operations, including applicable policies, regulations, and threats

  • Thorough understanding of the DoD 5000 Adaptive Acquisition Framework, acquisition phases, milestones, and documentation requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey complex information to stakeholders

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Advanced (MS or higher) degree in related engineering field

  • 3 years of experience with Missile Weapons Systems

  • 3 years of experience in submarine (strategic) operations

  • 3 years of experience using MBSE/SYSML tools such as MagicDraw/Cameo

  • 3 years of experience supporting Navy SSP

  • Strong experience with ACAT 1 strategic deterrence programs (ICBM, SLBM, nuclear command and control)

  • PMP or CAPM certification
