The Team You’ll Work With:

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Community Safety is responsible for advancing the City's strategy to keep New Yorkers safe through coordinated, effective, and community-centered approaches to public safety. The Office works across City government to prevent violence, strengthen crisis response, support victims and survivors, improve neighborhood safety, and build systems that address the root causes of harm.

The Deputy Mayor for Community Safety oversees and coordinates a portfolio of agencies, offices, and initiatives focused on violence prevention, crisis response, behavioral health, hate crime prevention, gender-based violence, reentry, youth safety, victim services, and neighborhood-based public safety strategies. The Office works closely with agencies and mayoral offices across City government to ensure that public safety efforts are strategic, accountable, and aligned with the Administration's priorities.

We value leadership, transparency, fairness, collaboration, and operational excellence as we actively seek diverse talents from various sectors to join our team.

The Problems You’ll Solve:

The Senior Advisor, Youth Services, will be responsible for the following:

  • Serve as the Deputy Mayor's Office lead for violence prevention-related youth services and opportunities, liaising between the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Community Safety and the Office of Community Safety (OCS), the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice, New York City Public Schools (NYCPS), the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), Administration for Children's Services (ACS), Department of Probation (DOP) when appropriate, and relevant Mayoral Offices.

  • Address concerns that overlap with safety and opportunity for young people, including the Summer Youth Employment Program, Anti-gun Violence Employment Program (AGVEP), and other workforce programs and opportunities for youth and young adults.

  • Develop and coordinate innovative approaches to economic empowerment for young people across the five boroughs. Identify high-potential partnerships with government agencies (e.g., Department of Transportation, Economic Develop Corporation, CUNY), labor, and the private and nonprofit sectors.

  • Help align New York City policy and practice with the evidence base for positive youth development.

  • Lead cross-system problem-solving on cases and systemic issues that extend beyond the capacity of the First Deputy Mayor and the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services portfolios, ensuring community safety considerations are integrated into youth services planning and response.

  • Support cross-sector coordination with city agencies, businesses and associations, nonprofits, and other community-based entities to develop immediate solutions and identify opportunities for policy change to improve safety outcomes for youth and young adults.

  • Provide program and project management support, especially on emergent, sensitive, high-visibility, and operationally complex initiatives at the intersection of the built environment and community safety.

  • Help track deliverables, timelines, budgets, risks, and follow-up items for priority public space improvement projects.

  • Write, edit, and coordinate reviews of briefings, memos, talking points, presentations, reports, and other materials to communicate complex health and safety policy and operational topics to a wide range of audiences.

  • Participate in internal and external meetings, working groups, task forces, and similar convenings with or on behalf of the Deputy Mayor's Office to ensure appropriate follow-up and clear next steps.

About You:

  • You have working knowledge of New York City's youth services landscape, including NYCPS, ACS, DYCD, or comparable large, complex systems.

  • You can operate independently with excellent time management skills and demonstrated ability to deliver on multiple, competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • You can effectively interact with people and partners across all levels within an organization, from frontline responders and clinicians to agency executives.

  • You have proven ability to navigate complex service systems and follow through on cross-agency problem-solving from identification to resolution.

  • You have strong judgment, discretion, and ability to work on sensitive issues involving individuals in crisis, vulnerable populations, interagency coordination, and community concerns about safety.

  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex clinical, operational, and policy information into clear and compelling materials for a range of audiences.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

  • 3+ years of work experience in city government, public policy, public safety, criminal justice, human services, community-based programming, operations, or a related field.
