Controller

Description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to support a growing operation in Muskegon, Michigan. This Long-term Contract-to-hire opportunity is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who can oversee core financial activities, manage the general ledger, and deliver accurate reporting for a business of approximately $25 - $50 million in revenue. The role requires strong technical accounting knowledge, a solid command of month-end close, and the ability to guide a small accounting team in day-to-day execution.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the full month-end closing cycle, ensuring timely completion of reconciliations, journal entries, and financial review activities.

• Manage the general ledger and maintain accurate balance sheet and profit and loss reporting for the organization.

• Prepare complete financial statements and support reliable reporting for leadership decision-making.

• Oversee daily accounting operations by reviewing the work of accounts payable, payroll, and project or cost accounting staff.

• Provide direct supervision, coaching, and quality control for the accounting team’s routine deliverables.

• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities as needed by the business.

• Apply technical accounting expertise to resolve complex accounting matters and strengthen financial accuracy.

• Support payroll-related entries and ensure related accounting records are properly reflected in the books.

• Contribute to accounting system process improvements, including work connected to the planned data migration.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience leading month-end close in a controller or senior accounting capacity.

• Strong knowledge of general ledger management, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.

• Proven ability to produce and analyze balance sheet and profit and loss reports.

• Solid background in technical accounting with the ability to address complex accounting issues.

• Experience supervising accounting staff and reviewing day-to-day transactional work.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting ERP systems.

• Familiarity with budgeting, financial planning, and supporting operational accounting functions.

• Ability to work onsite in Muskegon, Michigan on a permanent 40-hour schedule.
