Full job description

The Energy Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops technology solutions that enhance the resilience and efficiency of both civilian and defense infrastructure systems. This includes conducting strategic analyses to assess natural and adversarial threats to critical infrastructure sectors, identifying and developing technology solutions to mitigate these risks and enhance resilience, and developing hardware and real-time simulation testbeds.

The Energy Systems Group seeks a summer intern to work within a multi-disciplinary team developing an AI-enabled portfolio analysis capability. Using agentic AI, the team will integrate DoW-funded R&D documentation with technical and geospatial data to identify trends and gaps, assess prior investments, and guide future research addressing natural-hazard risks. The candidate will help design and implement these AI-based analysis tools. Tasks may include:

  • Developing agentic AI workflows for extracting, connecting, and analyzing information across technical documents

  • Integrating GIS and natural hazard data to assess geographic coverage, needs, and portfolio gaps

  • Developing and evaluating prototype analysis and visualization tools

The software and analyses produced by the candidate will contribute to an enduring portfolio-analysis capability used to inform future research investments and operational priorities.

Candidates who are pursuing a B.S., M.S., and/or Ph.D. in computer science, data science, engineering, applied mathematics, geographic information science, or a related technical discipline will be considered. Candidates must have strong problem-solving skills, work well independently and in teams, and possess effective written and oral communication skills.

A successful candidate is required to have Python software development experience and demonstrated capability or interest in a subset of the following areas:

  • Large language models, AI agents, RAG, or related AI/ML methods

  • GIS, geospatial analysis, and spatial data processing

  • Data engineering, visualization, and quantitative analysis

  • Natural hazards, infrastructure resilience, or systems analysis

Summer Research Program Overview

As an SRP intern, you’ll engage in hands-on research, receive dedicated mentorship, and take part in professional development opportunities including workshops, tech talks, and networking events—all while building connections within a vibrant community of peers.

  • Internships are typically 10–12 weeks, with flexible start and end dates, typically May through early August.

  • Housing support is available for eligible non-local interns, including access to discounted university housing in Boston and a one-time taxable relocation payment.

  • Complimentary daily shuttle transportation is provided from Boston-based housing to and from the Lab.
