Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview
The Facilities Construction Manager leads Joby's in-house construction services team and owns full management of all in-house construction projects, leading the team through the execution phase from quote to closeout. Sitting between in-house construction delivery and the Facilities Development PMO, this role directs prioritizing work, allocating crew and equipment resources, making build-in-house versus subcontract decisions, and holding budgets and deliverables accountable across concurrent projects. This is a working-manager seat carrying direct project management responsibility alongside team leadership, while providing construction-phase support and mentorship to PMO project managers across other sites.
Responsibilities
Construction Team Leadership
-
Directly lead, manage, and develop Joby's in-house construction team, including construction project staff, site superintendents, and skilled trades
-
Own resource management for the team by scheduling jobs without conflicts, planning around crew availability, and allocating people and equipment across concurrent projects
-
Make and defend build-versus-buy decisions using fully loaded labor cost accounting (including travel, per diem, and opportunity cost)
-
Establish crew utilization visibility to inform staffing, backfill, and delivery decisions
In-House Project Delivery & Construction-Phase Support
-
Own full management of all in-house construction projects from quote solicitation and vendor vetting through mobilization and closeout
-
Serve as a construction-phase advisor and mentor to PMO project managers on constructability, sequencing, means and methods, and cost
-
Provide construction-phase support and coverage for projects at other sites as bandwidth allows
-
Directly manage select projects end-to-end as portfolio load requires
Budget & Delivery Accountability
-
Hold singular accountability for budgets, standards, and delivery quality across the in-house construction portfolio
-
Ensure every in-house project budget is reconciled weekly to the latest invoices, committed costs, and forecasts
-
Drive deliverables to closure, prioritize open spend, close out completed projects, and coordinate capital transfers with Business & Finance
-
Partner with construction project finance on invoice tracking, PR/PO hygiene, and funding status within Smartsheet
Systems & Standards
-
Execute within PMO standards on Joby's Smartsheet/Control Center backbone as the source of truth
-
Contribute to PMO stage gates, estimating standards, and should-cost discipline for in-house delivery
-
Ensure compliance with applicable codes, permits, safety requirements, and internal standards on all work
Required
-
8+ years of experience in construction management and facilities project delivery, including direct field execution and self-perform work
-
Demonstrated success in direct people management, leading skilled-trades crews, superintendents, or construction project staff
-
Proven ownership in prioritizing competing portfolio demands, allocating constrained crew/equipment resources, and holding teams accountable to budgets and schedules
-
Strong project management fundamentals including scheduling, budgeting, forecasting, change control, and subcontractor management
-
Proficiency in fully loaded cost analysis and labor cost accounting for build-versus-subcontract decisions
-
Disciplined data practices with tools such as Smartsheet, MS Project, Procore, or Bluebeam
Desired
-
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
-
Experience managing both self-perform crews and general contractor delivery models
-
Experience with industrial, manufacturing, aviation, or airport facilities
-
