Full job description

Job Description

The New York City Law Department is accepting applications from admitted attorneys for Evening Court Supervisor to join the Juvenile Delinquency Evening Court Team in our Family Court Division. The Juvenile Delinquency Prosecution Unit investigates juvenile delinquency matters that are referred to the office and prosecutes the matters where appropriate. Juvenile delinquency matters currently involve youth ages 12 to 17 who have been arrested for conduct that would constitute a crime if they were adults. In prosecuting juvenile delinquency cases, the Family Court Division's Juvenile Delinquency Prosecution Unit seeks to ensure that those youth who commit delinquent acts are held accountable for their misconduct and receive appropriate services. The Family Court system is focused on rehabilitation.

The Evening Court Supervisor is responsible for supervising and managing the Evening Court staff, including both support staff, legal staff, and interns. Duties may include but are not limited to: conducting and/or supervising pre-petition detention hearings and interviews of law enforcement personnel and/or civilian witnesses; liaising with the Major Case Unit, Special Victims Unit and Borough Management on cases; may carry a modified caseload; and will research and analyze legal issues pertaining to cases and processing. The Supervisor must communicate with Division Management on any relevant issues regarding Evening Court operations and attend meetings and collaborate with other Evening Court stakeholders such as Criminal Court staff, the Department of Probation, the Administration for Children’s Services, and the defense bar to ensure Evening Court is running efficiently. In addition, the Evening Court Supervisor must ensure proper coverage, assist the Chief of Weekend/Holiday/Evening Court with office initiatives and administrative duties, and work an alternative schedule consisting of a combination of weekday nights, weekend nights, and holidays.

The role is particularly suited for attorneys seeking meaningful public service, particularly with regard to the success and well-being of the youth families and communities of NYC.

  1. Flexible Remote Work: Allows limited, irregular work from home days.

  2. Citywide Pilot Program: Allows attorneys to work remotely on two set days per week, subject to Division approval and staffing needs. Participants must maintain a single designated remote work location, and in person obligations take precedence over scheduled remote days.
