Academic Open Rank Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Hand Surgery
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking a Board-Eligible or Certified, Fellowship-trained Orthopaedic surgeon to provide exceptional patient care in the management of orthopaedic hand and upper extremity conditions. This is a tenure-eligible Open Rank Professor position to start in August 2027. Qualified applicants must have demonstrated clinical expertise and have demonstrated the ability to perform quality basic scientific or clinical research.
Candidates must have an MD and be board-eligible or board-certified. A fellowship in the sub-specialty of hand surgery with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery is required as well as evidence of academic productivity. Salary and tenure status are dependent upon qualifications. The position will remain open until filled.
The incumbent will join a group of 30 orthopaedic faculty who share emergency orthopaedic call coverage at a Level 1 quaternary care trauma center and assist in initial management of emergent musculoskeletal conditions outside of the hand surgery domain as needed for the Central Virginia region. The candidate will also share hand call with other hand and upper extremity faculty. Currently, the Orthopaedic Hand and Upper Extremity Division has four surgeons, three physician assistants, and two hand fellows to manage the patient population. The Orthopaedic Hand & Upper Extremity Division works collaboratively with two Plastics Hand Surgeons who are members of the UVA Hand Center. Training and exposure in the broad range of surgical techniques is preferable, particularly as it relates to hand, wrist, and elbow surgery and microvascular surgery.
The candidate will see patients in our newly constructed UVA Orthopaedic Center Ivy Road, a 200,000 square foot facility housing all orthopaedic subspecialties, physical therapy, outpatient operating rooms, conference space, prosthetics and orthotics, and a hand surgery clinic, and may also see hand and upper extremity patients in local outreach clinics. They will perform surgery in both the in-patient and the out-patient areas of the UVA Health System.

Education: Candidates must have an MD and be board-eligible or board-certified. A fellowship in the sub-specialty of hand and upper extremity is required as well as evidence of academic productivity.

Licensure: Candidates must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Virginia and be board-eligible or board-certified.
