Turn Data Into Better Rolling Intern in Rolling Engineering at ATI

At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a Rolling Engineering Intern, youll work directly with the Rolling team to analyze mill performance, investigate process variation, and identify opportunities to improve rolling operations. Youll combine engineering fundamentals, statistical analysis, and CAD skills with hands-on exposure to everyday shop operations in the mill.

What Youll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

  • Conduct a statistical review of cobbles on the rolling mill, including cobble locations, grades, speeds, causes, and other factors to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Analyze cobbles associated with restbar influence, comparing old versus new restbar styles.

  • Perform a statistical review of dimensional measurements from the mill compared with laser gauge measurements to evaluate the influence of downstream equipment on bar size.

  • Reverse engineer existing equipment and create engineering drawings for equipment where drawings are not currently available.

  • Analyze rolling process data to identify trends, investigate variation, and support mill performance improvements.

  • Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to support day-to-day rolling mill projects and shop operations.

What Youll Gain

  • Hands-on experience with metal rolling processes and mill operations.

  • Practical experience using statistical and data analysis to investigate manufacturing performance.

  • Experience analyzing rolling mill cobbles, dimensional variation, and process conditions.

  • Exposure to laser gauge measurements and downstream equipment influences on product dimensions.

  • Experience with reverse engineering and creating equipment drawings using CAD tools.

  • Direct exposure to the everyday shop operations and practices of a rolling mill.

  • Opportunities to collaborate with Operations and Engineering teams on real-world manufacturing improvement projects.

  • Potential opportunity to transition into a full-time Engineer Operations position at ATI after graduation
