The Pre-Sales Commercial & Contract Readiness Specialist is responsible for proactively identifying, evaluating, and mitigating contractual and commercial risk prior to customer purchase order issuance.
This role serves as a critical bridge between the proposal and order-entry processes, ensuring that customers purchase orders, terms and conditions, and ordering requirements align with approved proposal positions, negotiated agreements, pricing assumptions, and acceptable levels of business risk.
The position shifts commercial and contractual risk management upstream—resolving discrepancies before PO issuance rather than after an order has been received. Through proactive customer engagement, standardized ordering frameworks, and cross-functional collaboration, this role helps reduce post-award exceptions, order delays, unplanned cost exposure, and execution risk.
The successful candidate will combine strong contract-management expertise with commercial judgment and the ability to translate contractual risk into practical business impacts and recommendations.
Key Competencies
-
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong commercial judgment and risk orientation , balancing customer requirements and business objectives with appropriate protection of the company’s contractual and financial interests.
-
The role requires an individual who can operate effectively across organizational boundaries, exercise sound independent judgment, recognize when escalation is required, and communicate complex issues clearly without unnecessarily slowing the sales process.
-
Success will also require a proactive mindset . Rather than waiting for unacceptable terms to appear on an issued purchase order, this individual will identify recurring risks, engage stakeholders and customers earlier, and establish commercially acceptable positions before orders are placed.
You will make an impact with the following responsibilities:
-
Review customer purchase order terms and conditions prior to PO issuance and identify deviations from approved proposal, contractual, and commercial positions.
-
Ensure alignment between proposals, quotations, negotiated agreements, customer purchase orders, and other applicable commercial documents.
-
Identify contractual and commercial risks and evaluate the potential cost of risk, including potential impacts to pricing, schedule, scope, liability, warranty, technical obligations, cash flow, and project execution.
-
Develop recommended risk-mitigation strategies and coordinate appropriate reviews, escalations, and approvals for non-standard or exception positions.
-
Proactively engage with customers to redline and negotiate PO terms and templates before purchase order issuance, reducing repetitive negotiations and downstream order-processing delays.
-
Develop, own, and maintain customer-specific PO templates and order frameworks for strategic and large accounts with recurring or non-standard commercial requirements.
-
Partner with Sales and Proposal teams throughout the pre-sales process to ensure negotiated commercial positions are clearly documented and carried through to final customer ordering documents.
-
Serve as a commercial and contractual escalation point for complex or non-standard customer requirements prior to order acceptance.
-
Collaborate with Contracts, Legal, Sales, Finance, Technical/Engineering, Proposal Management, and operational stakeholders to resolve contractual discrepancies and establish commercially acceptable positions.
-
Review, coordinate, redline, and negotiate non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) in accordance with established company policies, delegated authority, and approval requirements.
-
Maintain clear documentation of negotiated positions, approved deviations, customer-specific requirements, risk decisions, and required approvals.
-
Identify recurring contractual and commercial issues and develop standardized language, templates, playbooks, and processes to improve consistency and cycle time.
-
Support continuous improvement of pre-PO commercial review processes, including opportunities for standardization, automation, and improved integration with enterprise contract-management systems.
-
Provide clear business recommendations regarding contractual risk, distinguishing between risks that can be mitigated, priced, transferred, or accepted through appropriate approval.
You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Legal Studies, Contract Management, Supply Chain and Engineering.
-
3+ years of relevant professional experience within a large, publicly traded company, with demonstrated success operating in complex, matrixed organizations.
-

-
Demonstrated experience reviewing, interpreting, redlining, and negotiating commercial terms and conditions.
-
Strong experience reviewing customer purchase orders, proposals, NDAs, and related commercial documentation.
-
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word redlining, including Track Changes, comments, document comparison, and management of negotiated revisions.
-
Experience using an enterprise Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) platform, including contract workflows, approval processes, repositories, and associated documentation.
-
Must be eligible to work in the US with no sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Demonstrated ability to identify contractual and commercial risk, assess its potential business and financial impact, and develop practical mitigation strategies.
-
Experience working collaboratively with Legal and Contracts organizations while independently managing commercial matters within established authority and governance.
-
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex negotiations, priorities, and stakeholders in a deadline-driven environment.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex contractual issues into concise business recommendations for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
-
Experience supporting large, strategic, or global customer accounts with complex or non-standard commercial requirements.
-
Experience developing and maintaining customer-specific PO templates, ordering agreements, contract templates, or similar standardized commercial frameworks.
-
Experience in a project-, solution-, engineering-, technology-, or equipment-based business involving meaningful technical and execution risk.
-
Demonstrated experience evaluating or quantifying cost of risk and incorporating contractual risk into pricing or other commercial decisions.
-
Experience supporting complex proposals and negotiations from initial opportunity development through purchase order or contract award.
-
Familiarity with commercial risk areas including limitation of liability, indemnification, warranties, intellectual property, payment terms, schedule commitments, acceptance criteria, termination rights, and other non-standard customer requirements.
-
Experience developing commercial playbooks, standard positions, negotiation guidance, or process improvements.
Measures of Success
Success in this role may be measured through improvements in:
-
Reduction in PO exceptions and contractual discrepancies identified after order receipt.
-
Reduction in order-entry delays attributable to unresolved commercial terms.
-
Increased percentage of strategic accounts operating under pre-negotiated or approved PO templates.
-
Reduction in repetitive redlining and negotiation of recurring customer terms.

-
Compliance with established approval authorities and risk-management processes.
-
Quality and consistency of documentation within the enterprise CLM.
-
Effectiveness of collaboration across Sales, Proposals, Contracts, Legal, Technical, Finance, and Operations.
