Full job description

About Uncovr Uncovr is building AI-powered infrastructure for the future of surgery. We work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, surgical video, clinical workflows, and healthcare technology. Our mission is to help surgical teams better understand, document, and improve surgical procedures by turning complex clinical data into structured, useful, and trustworthy insights. We are expanding our network of experienced medical coding specialists to bring deep coding and documentation expertise into the development and evaluation of next-generation surgical AI.

About the Collaboration We are looking for medical coding specialists with strong experience in US surgical coding to review operative documentation and evaluate AI-generated coding recommendations. In this role, you will help ensure that recommended codes and modifiers accurately reflect the documented services and applicable coding requirements. You will identify documentation gaps, explain coding decisions, and provide structured feedback to support AI training and evaluation. This is a flexible, paid collaboration designed to fit alongside your existing commitments, with assignments aligned with your expertise and availability.

What You’ll Do

  • Review operative reports and assess AI-generated coding recommendations for accuracy and completeness.

  • Identify appropriate CPT and ICD-10-CM codes within the agreed scope of each assignment.

  • Assess modifier use and identify missing, unsupported, or incorrectly applied modifiers.

  • Evaluate recommendations against applicable coding guidelines, NCCI edits, and payer requirements.

  • Distinguish separately reportable services from work included in the primary procedure.

  • Identify documentation gaps, ambiguities, and inconsistencies that prevent confident code assignment.

  • Recommend clear, nonleading clarification questions when additional information is needed from the surgeon.

  • Explain coding decisions and link recommendations to supporting passages in the operative report.

  • Flag unsupported coding, missed reportable services, and recommendations that exceed the available documentation.

  • Help develop reference cases, evaluation criteria, and coding review guidelines.

  • Collaborate with Uncovr’s clinical and AI teams to resolve complex cases and improve system performance.

What We’re Looking For

  • Professional experience in US medical coding, with a strong focus on surgical procedures and operative documentation.

  • Relevant coding certification, such as CPC, CCS, CCS-P, or an equivalent credential.

  • Strong working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, and surgical modifiers.

  • Practical experience applying coding guidelines, NCCI edits, and payer-specific requirements.

  • Ability to distinguish professional and facility coding requirements and work within a clearly defined claim setting.

  • Experience interpreting complex operative reports and identifying documentation needed to support code assignment.

  • Ability to explain coding decisions clearly, including uncertainty and alternative interpretations.

  • Strong attention to detail and a consistent approach to structured review.

  • Comfort using digital tools and learning a dedicated review platform.

  • Reliability in completing agreed assignments and communicating availability.

Nice to Have

  • Experience coding across multiple surgical specialties.

  • Experience with laparoscopic, robotic, or complex combined procedures.

  • Experience in coding audits, clinical documentation improvement, or physician education.

  • Familiarity with claim denials, coding-related appeals, and documentation-related reimbursement issues.

  • Experience building coding reference datasets, training materials, or quality assurance workflows.

  • Previous involvement in AI evaluation, coding automation, or healthcare technology development.

  • Experience with inpatient facility coding, including ICD-10-PCS, for assignments requiring that expertise.

Who You Are You are detail-oriented, analytical, and committed to accurate, well-supported coding. You understand that a plausible code is not enough: the documentation must support the recommendation, and the relevant coding rules must apply. You are comfortable flagging uncertainty, requesting clarification, and explaining why a recommendation should be accepted, revised, or rejected. You enjoy sharing your expertise and working with clinicians and engineers to make complex coding decisions understandable and reproducible.

Why Collaborate with Uncovr At Uncovr, your expertise will directly inform how AI translates surgical documentation into accurate, traceable coding recommendations for human review. You will contribute to meaningful advances in surgical technology through a flexible, paid collaboration, while working closely with a team building tools for real clinical workflows.
