Assistant Professor - Computational Neuroscience - Psychology (Tenure-Track)

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Psychology at the City College of New York (CCNY) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in computational neuroscience at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2027. The CCNY Psychology Department is a vibrant, diverse department located in Harlem, serving over 2000 undergraduate majors, with master’s programs in General Psychology and Mental Health Counseling. The department offers a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology; faculty also participate in Ph.D. programs in Neuroscience and Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center, and the M.S. program in Cognitive Neuroscience.

Specialty is open, but we are particularly interested in individuals with a robust research program in cognitive and/or affective neuroscience. We seek expertise in neurophysiological recording (fMRI, fNIRS, M/EEG, PET, peripheral physiology) and in computational analysis methods including machine learning (e.g., multi-voxel pattern classification analysis, SVMs, decoders). With this hire, we seek to bridge between the Psychology Department’s existing strengths in clinical and translational work and our developing cluster in computational neuroscience.

The department maintains strong affiliations with the Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI), a state-of-the-art research facility designed to foster interdisciplinary research, with imaging core and behavioral testing space shared with its twin building, the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), which manages a dedicated neuroscience initiative that includes a 3T MRI scanner on campus. The CUNY Graduate Center also hosts the CUNY Initiative for Theoretical Sciences (ITS), a collaborative research hub that emphasizes mathematical and theoretical approaches to the natural sciences. Computational resources include the CUNY High Performance Computing Center (CUNY-HPCC), and a recent $75 million gift from the Simons Foundation, which will expand computational expertise and capacity across CUNY and establish a M.S. program in Computational Science.

Opportunities for research collaborations exist at the Grove School of Engineering, CUNY School of Medicine and the U54 partnership between CCNY and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, plus additional intramural programs. Successful applicants are expected to maintain an active program of research, obtain external grant support, publish theoretical and empirical research in top-tier journals, be committed to both undergraduate and graduate education, and provide mentoring to students. The position will include teaching, research, mentorship, and departmental service, including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Ph.D. in psychology, neuroscience, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a similarly allied field is required.

Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarly achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in providing mentoring/advisement to neuroscience students.

The candidate is expected to maintain an active program of research, publish theoretical and empirical research in top-tier journals, be committed to both undergraduate and graduate education, and provide mentoring/advisement to students.

Potential for obtaining external grant support.

COMPENSATION

Assistant Professor: $79,630 - $94,017

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.
