Summary
About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Duties
- Instructs preparatory school physical education and conditioning courses to prepare candidates for United States Military Academy admission.
- Coaches collegiate-level sports teams, assists with football and track, maintains athletic facilities, and acts as a recruitment liaison for prospects.
- Develops daily lesson plans and implements modern teaching and coaching methodologies, incorporating training aids to maximize student participation.
- Administers and prepares physical aptitude exams and fitness tests to evaluate and document candidates' physical qualification for the Military Academy.
- Monitors recruited athlete performance across military training, academics, and physical education by collaborating with instructors and tactical officers.
- Maintains up-to-date performance databases and briefs the Director of Athletics on student-athlete progress, tracking development metrics.
- Participates in professional seminars and curriculum development committees to plan, evaluate, and revise physical education and intramural programs.
- Counsels student-athletes on academic, athletic, and school life adjustments while coordinating with department heads and maintaining testing records.
Qualifications
Who May Apply: US Citizens This is a full-time permanent appointment in the Excepted Service. In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: To qualify, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is defined as work that involves experience and success in working with athletes, coaching, and teaching subjects in Physical Education. -OR- Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.(NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's) in the following five areas: 1. Knowledge of college football recruitment, player development, and working with/for institutions that participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. 2. Ability to teach in a Physical Education program at a four-year college, junior college, or Preparatory School. 3. Mentorship of student-athletes across varying cultural and economic backgrounds. 4. Ability to supervise military or civilian personnel, scheduling athletic events, managing a budget, maintaining supply and accountability of assigned equipment and property. 5. Demonstrated Academic Achievement.

Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement. Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. This position is not eligible for regular, and recurring telework. This position is eligible for situational telework only, including emergency and OPM prescribed "unscheduled telework". Situational telework is sometimes also referred to as episodic, intermittent, unscheduled, or ad-hoc telework. Situational telework is approved on a case-by-case basis, where the hours worked were not part of a previously approved, ongoing, and regular telework schedule.
