At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.

BETA Technologies is seeking a State & Local Tax Manager to help build and scale the Company’s U.S. state and local tax function. This role will lead key aspects of state and local tax compliance, reporting, research, planning, and risk management across BETA’s growing operations. The State & Local Tax Manager will work closely with Finance, Accounting, Supply Chain, Procurement, Manufacturing, Legal, IT, and external advisors. The right candidate brings strong multistate tax experience, sound practical judgment, and a process-improvement mindset suited to a fast-moving, technically complex operating environment.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Lead state and local tax compliance activities, including sales and use tax, state income tax, franchise tax, business tax, and other applicable non-income tax filings.
  • Coordinate tax returns, payments, extensions, reconciliations, notices, and supporting documentation with internal teams, external service providers, and tax advisors.
  • Maintain filing calendars, registrations, nexus analyses, exemption certificates, and other critical SALT records.
  • Manage relationships with external tax consultants and compliance providers, helping ensure deliverables are timely, accurate, well documented, and aligned with BETA’s business needs.
  • Partner with external advisors on technical tax research, state and local tax audits, notices, refund opportunities, voluntary disclosures, and other tax matters.
  • Research and document tax issues involving taxability, sourcing, exemptions, use tax, apportionment, state income tax, and other multistate matters.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on tax considerations related to new products, suppliers, operations, contracts, incentives, and business initiatives.
  • Partner with Accounting on tax accruals, financial reporting support, audit requests, and documentation of significant tax positions.
  • Work with Procurement and Supply Chain to identify and mitigate use-tax exposure, improve vendor tax treatment, and support exemption opportunities.
  • Monitor changes in state and local tax law with external advisors and assess potential impacts to BETA’s operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, Business, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant state and local tax experience in a corporate tax department, public accounting firm, or similarly complex environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with sales and use tax compliance, plus working knowledge of state income tax, franchise tax, business tax, or other non-income taxes.
  • Strong understanding of multistate tax concepts, including nexus, taxability, sourcing, exemptions, use tax, apportionment, and audit support.
  • Experience working effectively with external tax advisors, compliance providers, and consultants.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and project-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while collaborating effectively across internal and external teams.
  • Sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and comfort working through ambiguity in a growing organization.

Above and Beyond Qualifications:

  • CPA, CMI, JD, MST, or comparable credential.
  • Experience supporting a manufacturing, aerospace, industrial, technology, or other complex operating business.
  • Experience with tax technology or systems such as Vertex, Avalara, ONESOURCE, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar platforms.
  • Experience in both public accounting and an in-house corporate tax function.
  • Familiarity with tax considerations related to manufacturing operations, supply chains, capital projects, or multistate expansion.
