Full job description
At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. This position supports professional surveyors and higher-level technicians in conducting and reviewing field survey activities within Location and Survey. The role provides guidance, direction, and technical support to lower-level technicians performing location, property, geodetic, and hydrographic surveys. The position requires fieldwork in potentially hazardous environments, including areas near vehicular traffic and difficult or uneven terrain. Strict adherence to established safety procedures and the use of required protective equipment are essential responsibilities of the role. The position also requires frequent statewide travel, including overnight stays from Monday through Thursday each week. This position is located in East Baton Rouge parish and reports to the Engineering Technician Supervisor. Three years of experience in an environmental science, engineering or engineering technology, spatial and mapping technology, forestry, ecology, land surveying, land management, or operation and/or maintenance of mobile equipment; OR
Eighteen semester hours in either architecture, cartography, construction, drafting, engineering, GIS, a physical science, or in an industrial or mathematics discipline. The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here. Job Duties: Depending on level and assignment, Land Technician 4 Inspectors may:
- Lead field crews conducting property boundary, topographic, elevation, drainage, hydrographic, and GPS surveys.
- Coordinate accurate collection of electronic field survey data using established three-dimensional coordinate systems.
- Review, edit, and revise electronic survey data to produce accurate topographic representations and digital terrain models.
- Operate survey instruments, GPS equipment, vehicles, boats, ATVs, and other field equipment as required.
- Organize and oversee daily operations of survey crews and contracted personnel.
- Establish vertical control marks, run levels, and verify GPS control points for real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS surveys.
- Coordinate property surveys for public and private properties affected by proposed construction projects, including title research and field surveys.
- Communicate with property owners regarding survey activities and obtain permission to access private property.
- Prepare survey reports and forms, reduce field notes, and verify the accuracy of three-dimensional coordinate transformations.
- Train and assist junior technicians and perform additional duties, including emergency and disaster support activities, as needed.
Position-Specific Details: Compensation: This position qualifies for a premium pay of $2.00/hour for every hour worked. Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.
