Description

Key Responsibilities

Tax Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead and oversee the firm's tax function, including tax compliance, planning, research, and client advisory services.

  • Serve as the firm's primary internal tax expert and resource for complex client matters.

  • Develop and implement tax strategies for high-net-worth individuals, families, business owners, trusts, estates, and closely held entities.

  • Identify tax planning opportunities across clients' investment, business, estate, and wealth structures.

  • Work closely with the firm's investment, wealth planning, and client advisory teams to integrate tax considerations into broader wealth strategies.

  • Help establish and develop the firm's long-term tax service offering and infrastructure.

Estate, Gift & Trust Tax

  • Advise clients on estate and gift tax planning, wealth transfer strategies, and lifetime gifting.

  • Work with attorneys and estate planning professionals on sophisticated estate structures.

  • Review and advise on trusts, family entities, charitable planning, and intergenerational wealth transfers.

  • Oversee preparation and/or review of estate, gift, and trust tax returns.

  • Assist with estate administration and post-mortem tax planning where appropriate.

Partnership & Investment Tax

  • Lead tax planning and compliance for partnerships, LLCs, S corporations, and other closely held entities.

  • Advise on complex partnership structures, allocations, distributions, capital accounts, and transactions.

  • Review K-1s and complex investment tax reporting.

  • Advise clients regarding the tax implications of private equity, venture capital, real estate, carried interests, and other alternative investments.

  • Coordinate tax reporting across individual, trust, partnership, and investment structures.

Individual Tax

  • Oversee complex individual tax returns for high-net-worth clients.

  • Provide proactive tax planning throughout the year rather than focusing solely on compliance.

  • Address issues involving investment income, capital gains, charitable giving, business interests, equity compensation, and other complex sources of income.

  • Review federal and state tax implications for clients with multi-state or multi-jurisdictional exposure.

Client & Advisor Relationships

Develop trusted relationships with clients and become a key member of their broader professional advisory team.

Work closely with clients' estate attorneys, investment professionals, CFOs, family offices, and other advisors.

Participate in client meetings and present sophisticated tax concepts in a clear, practical manner.

Act as a strategic advisor rather than simply a tax return preparer.

Team & Practice Development

Manage and mentor tax staff and outside tax resources as the tax function grows.

Establish processes, standards, and quality controls for tax compliance and advisory work.

Build a scalable tax practice appropriate for a boutique wealth management firm.

Stay current on federal and state tax legislation and emerging planning opportunities

Requirements

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

8+ years of relevant tax experience, ideally within a CPA firm, family office, wealth management firm, or sophisticated private client practice.

Strong experience with high-net-worth individuals and families.

Deep technical knowledge of estate and gift tax, trusts, partnerships, and individual taxation.

Strong understanding of closely held businesses and the interaction between business, investment, and personal taxation.

Experience reviewing or managing complex tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120-S, 709, and 706.

CPA, JD/LLM in Tax, or comparable advanced tax credentials preferred.

Strong client-facing and communication skills.

Ability to operate independently and take ownership of the tax function.

Commercial judgment and the ability to translate complex tax issues into practical recommendations.

A proactive mindset and interest in tax planning and wealth strategy, not just tax compliance.
