Full job description

The Lumber Manufactory (TLM) is building the future of sustainable lumber with next-generation sawmill technology. We design and operate state-of-the-art modular sawmills that produce high-grade dimensional wood products with greater efficiency and less waste. Backed by leading investors including Cantos, Slow Ventures, Banter Capital, Humba Ventures, and Ravelin Capital.

The Lumber Manufactory is seeking a Controller to own our accounting function end to end. You'll run the close, build the accounting team, and oversee payroll accounting and multi-entity consolidation, working closely with our VP of Finance, FP&A and HR. This is a chance to build the finance foundation for a company that is bringing new mills online and growing through acquisition, at a fast-growing, venture-backed company. The processes you set up will carry us through each new mill and each new acquisition. This role is based in Seattle and reports to our VP of Finance. It's best suited for candidates who are already local or willing to relocate, with occasional travel to our Mississippi mill sites. In This Role, You Will

  • Own the monthly, quarterly and annual close, delivering accurate GAAP financial statements on a predictable timeline.

  • Run general ledger, AP, AR, fixed assets, inventory and cost accounting, including standard costing and variance analysis for mill production.

  • Oversee capitalization and depreciation for mill construction and equipment, including construction-in-progress tracking.

  • Design and maintain internal controls, policies and procedures that scale with the business and keep us audit-ready.

  • Manage the annual financial statement audit and serve as the main contact for external auditors and tax advisors.

  • Partner with FP&A on budgets, forecasts and reporting to the CFO, leadership team and board.

  • Oversee payroll accounting for salaried and hourly teams, partnering with HR and payroll on timekeeping, department coding, accruals, benefits accounting, payroll tax filings and multi-state compliance.

  • Lead multi-entity consolidation, intercompany accounting and eliminations.

  • Drive accounting for acquisitions, from due diligence through opening balance sheets, purchase accounting, policy alignment and close integration.

  • Lead or co-lead ERP selection and implementation, and bring acquired entities onto our systems, keeping the finance stack (ERP, HRIS, AP) connected and clean.

  • Hire and develop accountants as the business grows, with clear roles, workflows and a close calendar that keep pace as new mills come online.

  • Adapt to changing priorities and support team and operational needs as they evolve.

Who You Are

  • A hands-on accounting leader who has run a close in a manufacturing environment.

  • A builder who is comfortable creating processes where none exist and scaling them as the company grows.

  • Willing to do the work yourself while building the team that will take it over.

  • A clear communicator with operators, executives, auditors and the board.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, and an active CPA license.

  • 8 - 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including time in public accounting (Big 4 or national firm preferred).

  • Currently in a Senior Accounting Manager, Associate Controller, Assistant Controller or Controller role.

  • Manufacturing accounting experience, including inventory, cost accounting and fixed assets.

  • Deep knowledge of US GAAP and experience owning a full close and external audit.

  • Hands-on experience overseeing payroll and payroll accounting, including for hourly workforces.

  • Based in or willing to relocate to the Seattle area.

Preferred qualifications:

  • M&A integration experience, including purchase accounting, opening balance sheets and integrating acquired teams and processes.

  • Multi-entity consolidation and intercompany accounting experience.

  • A track record of hiring and developing an accounting team.

  • ERP implementation or integration experience.

  • A background in wood products, lumber, forestry or other heavy-industry manufacturing.

  • Experience at a venture-backed, high-growth company preparing for later-stage financing, audit scrutiny or public-company readiness.

  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, ADP and Ramp, or comparable ERP, HRIS and spend tools.

Compensation The expected salary range for this position is $180,000 to $200,000. Placement within this range is determined by the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and educational background as compared to the requirements of the role.

We offer competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, including:

  • 100% employer-paid health coverage for employees and dependents (medical, dental, and vision)

  • 100% employer-paid life insurance and disability coverage

  • Paid time off and company holidays

  • The opportunity to help build something from the ground up in an essential, evolving industry

Join our team as we modernize timber from forest to finished product. The Lumber Manufactory is an equal opportunity employer committed to building an inclusive team. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
