Job Description
A large healthcare system in Philadelphia, PA is seeking experienced Category Managers with healthcare sourcing experience, ideally focused on capital equipment, to support its Strategic Sourcing organization across a complex and growing enterprise of 33 hospitals.
This is a strategic category management role rather than a transactional procurement position. The Category Manager will develop and execute enterprise-wide sourcing strategies for high-value capital equipment and related categories, partnering closely with clinical, operational, facilities, finance, supply chain, and executive stakeholders.
The Category Manager will evaluate the full scope of assigned categories, including capital spend, equipment standardization, vendor mix, utilization, market conditions, total cost of ownership, service and maintenance requirements, contract structure, supplier performance, and consolidation opportunities. This individual will determine when to renegotiate with existing suppliers, standardize or consolidate vendors, or take a category to market through a competitive RFP.
The ideal candidate has strong healthcare strategic sourcing experience and an understanding of how capital equipment purchasing impacts clinical and hospital operations. Experience sourcing major medical, clinical, diagnostic, facilities, or other capital equipment is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities Develop and execute enterprise-wide category strategies for capital equipment and other high-value healthcare categories. Analyze capital spend, supplier mix, equipment utilization, market conditions, operational requirements, and cost-saving opportunities. Identify opportunities to standardize equipment, aggregate spend, consolidate suppliers, and improve total cost of ownership across hospitals and facilities. Lead complex, high-value RFPs from initial strategy through supplier evaluation, negotiation, award, and contract execution. Partner with clinical leaders and hospital stakeholders to understand equipment requirements, operational needs, implementation considerations, and long-term service needs. Evaluate equipment pricing alongside warranties, maintenance agreements, service contracts, technology upgrades, lifecycle costs, and other commercial considerations. Lead complex supplier negotiations involving multimillion-dollar contracts and sourcing initiatives. Draft and negotiate statements of work, pricing exhibits, service-level agreements, equipment schedules, maintenance terms, and other contractual documents. Review and redline supplier contracts in partnership with Legal, Finance, Supply Chain, and operational stakeholders. Establish steering committees for major sourcing initiatives and guide stakeholders through supplier evaluation and decision-making. Facilitate vendor presentations, product evaluations, negotiations, and executive-level decision-making meetings. Evaluate supplier performance, contractual risk, service quality, pricing, equipment standardization opportunities, and overall value. Monitor upcoming capital needs and contract expirations while maintaining a broader, long-term category strategy. Develop recommendations that balance financial savings, clinical requirements, patient care, operational needs, quality, compliance, and organizational risk.
Skills and Requirements
5-7 years of progressive experience in strategic sourcing, category management, procurement, or supplier management. Experience working within healthcare, a health system, hospital network, medical device environment, or healthcare-focused sourcing organization. Demonstrated experience developing and executing category strategies rather than solely managing individual purchases or contract renewals. Experience leading complex, high-value RFPs and supplier negotiations. Experience managing multimillion-dollar contracts, categories, or sourcing initiatives. Strong understanding of strategic sourcing methodology, supplier evaluation, spend analysis, and contract negotiation. Experience drafting and negotiating statements of work, pricing terms, service levels, equipment schedules, and other contract components. Ability to analyze spend, supplier landscapes, utilization, market conditions, standardization opportunities, and total cost of ownership. Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and guide clinical, operational, and cross-functional stakeholders toward a sourcing decision. Strong written and verbal communication, negotiation, analytical, and presentation skills. Ability to operate independently within a large, complex, matrixed healthcare organization.
Direct experience sourcing capital equipment within a hospital or health system. Experience sourcing medical devices, diagnostic equipment, imaging equipment, surgical equipment, clinical technology, facilities equipment, or other major capital assets. Experience negotiating equipment purchases that include maintenance agreements, warranties, service contracts, software, implementation, or lifecycle support. Experience working with clinicians, physicians, hospital leadership, finance, supply chain, facilities, and other stakeholders on capital purchasing decisions. Experience with Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs). Understanding of healthcare operations, regulatory considerations, capital planning, and the impact of sourcing decisions on clinical teams and patient care. Experience supporting a large health system, hospital network, or similarly complex healthcare enterprise.
