Description

NYU Stern School of Business has a dynamic and well-recognized course of study focused on an undergraduate Social Impact Core (https://www.stern.nyu.edu/programs-admissions/undergraduate/social-impact/social-impact-curriculum) . These courses are primarily designed and delivered within the Business and Society Program. We are currently recruiting a clinical faculty member with expertise in the areas of law, business, and ethics to strengthen our community in those areas. The successful candidate would be expected to teach multiple sections of the required undergraduate courses Law, Business, and Society and Professional Responsibility & Leadership (https://docs.google.com/document/d/15KVEBXw98J2\_3pt1qmNXGAs-Gv070P8MO2l5Tm3DEtk/edit?usp=sharing) , and also the course Professional Responsibility, which is required for full-time and part-time MBA students, as well as students in other focused Master’s degree programs.

Law, Business and Society Course Description

This course is an introductory undergraduate course that provides students who have no previous knowledge with a basic understanding of the American legal system. The instructor will present legal cases and hypotheticals from the perspective of multiple stakeholders while focusing on the connection between law, business, and society. The instructor will also demonstrate how laws may reflect societal norms, promote material well-being and reflect economic/historical conditions. The course consists of a common core of customized course readings drawn upon judicial decisions, articles, podcasts, and other materials.

Professional Responsibility and Leadership Course Description

PRL is a required, interdisciplinary undergraduate capstone course that builds on prior coursework within the Social Impact Core Curriculum as well as other coursework at Stern and at NYU. The basic format of the course is a discussion seminar. These discussions draw on three different sources, including thoughtful insights drawn from a variety of academic disciplines in the liberal arts and sciences, business cases, and the students’ own personal experiences and values. The course unfolds as a process of students and faculty working together in response to open-ended, age-old questions. Each class session may include a variety of activities, including discussion, in-class reading and writing, role-playing, and other exercises. These various activities will be designed and facilitated by the instructor to allow students to engage in reflective dialogue. The instructor’s teaching style should be highly interactive.

Professional Responsibility Course Description

Professional Responsibility is a theory, discussion- and reflection-based course that aims to help MBA students (and students in other Master’s degree programs) gain an understanding of the purpose, roles and impact of business in society, develop a positive vision of what business can be, and a realistic understanding of what it often is, and develop the intellectual capital to recognize and navigate the ambiguities, hazards and opportunities they will face in their careers. The student who completes this course should develop a balanced view of the role of business in society, and of the role of the individual professional in business, as well as a deep appreciation for the interconnected nature of these institutional and individual roles.

Teaching and Learning Expectations
