About the Team Accounting at Rippling is responsible for supporting, protecting, and communicating the financial story of our business. We assess, track, and record every penny that Rippling transacts across an increasingly sophisticated multi-product platform. Our diverse team spans the United States, Europe, and India, scaling rapidly to meet international expansion and hypergrowth. You will join an elite, high-performing group of accounting professionals hailing from tier-one tech, Big 4 national offices, and standard-setting bodies like the FASB. About the Role As Rippling continues its rapid growth trajectory and global scale, we are hiring a Director of Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting based in our New York office. Reporting directly to the Chief Accounting Officer, you will serve as the company’s chief technical authority and architect of our external financial reporting function. This is a premier leadership seat designed for an elite technical mind, such as a current or recent Senior Manager/Director in a Big 4 National Office/Technical Accounting Advisory practice, a former FASB/SEC Fellow, or an established in-house technical accounting and SEC reporting leader. You will own complex transaction structuring, build audit-ready financial statement architectures, author definitive technical positions under US GAAP, and serve as the principal advisor to the CAO, CFO, and product leadership. What You Will Do
- Reporting Architecture: Design, implement, and lead the external financial reporting engine, building best-in-class footnote disclosures, non-GAAP reconciliation builds, and reporting timelines.
- Complex Technical Accounting: Lead research, resolution, and executive documentation for high-complexity accounting matters, including ASC 606 (multi-element enterprise software, SaaS, and embedded fintech solutions), ASC 718 (complex equity structures and secondary transactions), ASC 350-40 (internal-use software capitalization), ASC 842, and strategic M&A / debt transactions.
- National Office Policy Framework: Establish and maintain Rippling’s Global Accounting Policy manual, ensuring consistent technical interpretation and application across multiple legal entities and international jurisdictions.
- Thought Partnership & Standard Setting: Monitor, evaluate, and operationalize new FASB Accounting Standards Updates (ASUs); author whitepapers that translate nuanced accounting theory into pragmatic business operations.
- Audit Partner Interface: Serve as the primary, authoritative liaison to national and engagement leadership of our independent external audit firm on technical accounting matters, financial statement uplift, and non-routine transactions.
- Deal Structuring & Product Advisory: Partner directly with Product, Engineering, Corporate Development, and Legal teams to evaluate the accounting implications of new commercial product features, entity structures, and business models before rollout.
- SOX & Governance: Co-design and enforce technical accounting controls and disclosure controls and procedures (DC&P) compliant with SOX 404 requirements.
- Mentorship & Team Leadership: Recruit, mentor, and elevate a high-caliber technical accounting and reporting team, fostering a culture of technical rigor, clarity, and ownership.
What You Will Need
-
Education & Credentials: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting; active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is required.
-
Pedigree & Relevant Experience: 10+ years of progressive technical accounting and reporting experience, with significant background in:
-
• A Big 4 National Office, Accounting Advisory Services (AAS), or SEC Practice Group;
-
Direct standard-setting fellowship or rotation (e.g., FASB, SEC, or similar regulatory fellowship); and/or
-
In-house leadership owning SEC Reporting and Technical Accounting at an established, high-growth public technology or fintech company.
-
Deep US GAAP & SEC Mastery: Comprehensive command of US GAAP (specifically ASC 606, ASC 718, and ASC 350-40) and SEC reporting regulations (Regulation S-X, Regulation S-K, and Non-GAAP guidance).
-
Clear, Persuasive Communication: Proven ability to synthesize ambiguous, highly complex accounting standards into crisp, decisive executive memos and defend technical conclusions with national office auditors and audit committees.
-
Execution & Ownership: High-growth agility—comfortable architecting long-term enterprise policy frameworks while rolling up your sleeves to write primary accounting position papers and disclosure footnotes.
-
Location: Based in or willing to relocate to the New York City metropolitan area.
