Job Title: R&D EngineerJob Description

The R&D Engineer supports the development, validation, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes for medical devices. This role focuses on authoring, executing, and supporting process validation activities, developing and qualifying equipment, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure processes are efficient, compliant, and aligned with quality and safety standards. It is an excellent entry-level opportunity for an engineer who wants to gain hands-on experience in a regulated medical device manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Author, execute, and support process validation activities, including Test Method Validation (TMV), Inspection Method Validation (IMV), Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), Performance Qualification (PQ), and Product Performance Qualification (PPQ).

  • Lead and support process development projects from initial concept through full implementation in manufacturing.

  • Assist with equipment specification, acquisition, qualification, and deployment to support new and existing processes.

  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate processes, equipment, and materials, ensuring they meet performance and quality requirements.

  • Analyze test results and validation data to identify trends, process variability, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Present findings, conclusions, and recommendations to engineering and project teams in a clear and structured manner.

  • Evaluate existing manufacturing processes and equipment to verify process suitability, robustness, and efficiency.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), manufacturing specifications, validation protocols and reports, risk assessments, safety instructions, and work instructions.

  • Collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams to implement process and equipment improvements.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, compliance, efficiency, and safety within the manufacturing environment.

  • Provide training and technical expertise related to manufacturing processes, tooling, process development, and validation activities.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to achieve project objectives and ensure alignment on technical requirements and timelines.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Life Sciences, or a related technical discipline (such as Mechanical, Biomedical, or Chemical Engineering).

  • 13 years of engineering experience in a medical device manufacturing environment, preferably in a regulated setting.

  • Experience with medical device processes and standards, including familiarity with validation and process development activities.

  • Technical writing experience with the ability to create clear, accurate, and compliant documentation such as SOPs, validation reports, and work instructions.

  • Ability to design and execute experiments and analyze data to draw meaningful conclusions and support decision-making.

  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams.

  • Attention to detail and a structured approach to validation, documentation, and process evaluation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Exposure to or knowledge of process validation activities such as TMV, IMV, IQ, OQ, PQ, and PPQ.

  • Experience supporting process development from concept through implementation in a manufacturing environment.

  • Familiarity with risk assessments, safety instructions, and continuous improvement methodologies.

  • Interest in building a career in medical device engineering and process development within a regulated industry.

  • Ability to present technical findings and recommendations clearly to engineering and project teams.

Work Environment

This is an on-site, entry-level R&D Engineer position based in Minnetonka, Minnesota. The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule, working 8 hours per day with a flexible start and end time within a general 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. window, aligned with the teams working hours. The position offers an initial 6-month assignment with the potential to extend or transition to direct hire based on performance and business needs. The environment is a professional medical device manufacturing and engineering setting, where you will work closely with cross-functional teams, utilize specialized equipment, and follow established procedures, safety guidelines, and quality standards.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $36.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
