Full job description

Under general supervision of Major.

  • Responsible for overall supervision of subordinate security and supervision/custody of all inmates assigned to the institution.

  • Makes routine inspections of living areas for compliance with security/safety/sanitation standards.

  • Assists in conducting formal and informal counts.

  • Supervises job performance/conduct/appearance of assigned security personnel and prepares employee evaluations.

  • Counsels/recommends disciplinary action.

  • Trains/develops/instructs/evaluates/counsels subordinates to ensure duty performance in accordance with state laws/agency policies.

  • Supervises operations ensuring accuracy of inmate releases/transfers/counts.

  • Back-up for major/responsible authority/inmate disciplinary system.

  • Monitors inmate drug testing.

  • Oversees contraband, property, maintenance, canteen, commissary, vehicles, grounds, recreation management review.

  • Work schedule subject to change.

  • In facility rotation for duty warden.

  • Responds to institutional emergencies.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant supervisory experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required supervisory experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and six (6) years' experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 2 years).
  • Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
