The Department of Mathematics at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2027. The area of emphasis is Algebraic Combinatorics or Representation Theory, though outstanding candidates in any area aligned with departmental interests are encouraged to apply.

We seek candidates committed to engaging in widely recognized research in the mathematical sciences and to providing UVA students with a high-quality mathematics education. The successful candidate will join a research-active department with a PhD program in mathematics. The teaching load is three courses per academic year, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Duties also include mentoring and supervising graduate students, and service to the department, the University, and the profession.

A Group 1 research department, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Virginia actively engages in research in a wide range of fields within algebra, analysis, topology, geometry, and the history of mathematics. The Institute of Mathematical Science further enhances the Department's research agenda through its sponsorship of numerous visiting scholars and speakers. Located on the University's Central Grounds, the Department and the Institute form part of what Thomas Jefferson called the "academical village," an interacting group of scholars in the humanities, the social sciences and the sciences.

The University of Virginia is consistently ranked among the nation's very best public universities, a Carnegie R1 research institution, and the only U.S. university whose campus is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UVA is located in historic Charlottesville, Virginia, a scenic, culturally vibrant small city nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Charlottesville frequently appears on lists of America's best places to live, offering a high quality of life with diverse neighborhoods, excellent schools, and abundant opportunities for dining, arts, shopping, and entertainment, along with unparalleled access to sports and outdoor recreation. The mathematics department currently includes 26 tenured or tenure track faculty, 6 permanent teaching faculty, and approximately 50 graduate students and postdocs.

Minimum qualifications. Candidates should have a PhD in mathematics or a closely related field by the start of the appointment (candidates on track to complete their PhD by May 2027 may apply). Candidates must show a strong record of research, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of students.
