About the Department of Emergency Medicine

The UVA Department of Emergency Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in clinical care, education, and research. The department’s faculty care for more than 75,000 patients annually across UVA Health’s academic emergency department and regional sites.

Educational excellence is a core mission, with a robust residency program, fellowships in EMS, medical toxicology, ultrasound, and global health, and active student programs. Faculty are nationally recognized for innovation in AI-augmented learning, simulation-based education, physician well-being initiatives, and operational research.

The department has strong institutional support for educational innovation, with collaborative ties to the School of Medicine Office of Educational Affairs, UVA’s Link Lab for data science and engineering, and the Center for Advanced Medical Analytics.

Research is a rapidly growing pillar of the Department’s mission under the leadership of the Vice Chair for Research and Innovation, with a distinctive emphasis on digital health, artificial intelligence, data science, clinical informatics, and robotics. Departmental faculty develop and deploy clinical AI and prediction tools on real-time health system data, build health data infrastructure, and study the sociotechnical and ethical dimensions of technology in acute care, in close collaboration with UVA’s School of Data Science, School of Engineering, and Link Lab. Departmental research infrastructure includes a weekly research incubator series, an internal pilot grant program for junior faculty and trainees, embedded data science support, and strong ties to UVA’s emerging enterprise research data platform. Prehospital research is a strategic priority for the Department, and this position offers the opportunity to help build it with dedicated mentorship and support.
