Full job description

The Senior Accountant oversees complex general ledger accounting for a portfolio of Class A office properties in the DC Metro region. This role manages full-cycle accounting, prepares accurate and timely financial statements, and ensures compliance with internal controls and procedures. The position operates within the Accounting & Finance job family and plays a key role in supporting property management, audit, tax, and ownership reporting needs during a coverage period for an employee leave or transition, with an initial assignment duration of three months and potential for extension.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of Class A office properties in the DC Metro region, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately and timely.

  • Create and post month-end accounting journal entries, collaborating with property staff, lease administration, and other internal teams to ensure complete and accurate property financials.

  • Review all general ledger activity for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification, identifying and resolving discrepancies as needed.

  • Prepare monthly financial statements, including income statements and balance sheets, along with detailed balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Develop and maintain SOX workpapers to support internal control and compliance requirements.

  • Draft clear and insightful variance report comments that explain property performance against budget and prior periods.

  • Calculate tenant recovery billings for common area maintenance (CAM) and property taxes, ensuring accuracy and alignment with lease terms.

  • Review new leases to confirm accurate revenue recognition and proper setup of recovery structures.

  • Provide support to audit teams by preparing schedules, answering questions, and supplying documentation for financial and compliance audits.

  • Assist tax compliance teams by providing financial data, schedules, and supporting documentation as requested.

  • Respond to ad hoc ownership requests, preparing analyses, reports, and explanations tailored to ownership needs.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, with 25 years of relevant accounting or finance experience; a combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Proven experience in general ledger accounting, including full-cycle accounting for multiple entities or properties.

  • Experience preparing financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and related reconciliations.

  • Hands-on experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.

Work Environment

This position follows a hybrid work model, typically working Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with 23 days per week onsite at the McLean, VA location. The role operates in a professional office environment, collaborating closely with property staff, lease administration, audit, tax, and property management teams. Work is primarily computer-based, using Microsoft Office tools and Yardi software to prepare journal entries, financial statements, reconciliations, and reports. The assignment is initially planned for three months to provide coverage during an employee leave or transition, with the possibility of extension based on business needs.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80.00 - $80.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
