Full job description
Overview
Working at Atlassian Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. The Role We're looking for product-minded Principal Engineers. This is a hands-on P60 individual-contributor role for engineers who sit at the seam between deep technical craft and sharp product judgment — and can hold both at once. You'll own customer-facing products end to end across the full stack, shape what gets built rather than just how, and build the next generation of AI-native and agentic experiences used by teams all over the planet.
Responsibilities
-
Own customer-facing product features end to end across the full stack — React/TypeScript front ends, backend services, and APIs — taking ambiguous problems all the way to shipped, measured outcomes.
-
Make architecture and technical decisions in service of user and business outcomes; let product goals drive the engineering, not the other way around.
-
Use telemetry and user behavior to shape design — define success metrics (north star and guardrails), instrument, monitor, run root-cause deep dives, and change your mind when the data says so.
-
Design and build AI-enabled and agentic experiences, integrating LLMs and AI workflows into products that reach millions of users.
-
Set technical direction for your team and influence product strategy, partnering closely with product managers, designers, and platform teams.
-
Raise the engineering bar through code, design reviews, coaching, and mentoring — leading by craft as a senior individual contributor.
-
Find the highest-leverage problems in ambiguous spaces, prototype quickly, and drive prototypes to production-grade quality, reliability, and performance at scale.

Qualifications
-
Experience & Education: 10+ years of professional software engineering experience across both frontend and backend domains (or a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline with equivalent practical experience).
-
Frontend Architecture: Deep hands-on expertise building scalable, highly accessible, performant, and responsive web applications using modern JavaScript/TypeScript and frameworks (such as React).
-
Backend Systems & Services: Proven track record designing, building, and maintaining robust, high-throughput backend services and microservices (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Node.js, Go, or Python) operating at massive scale.
-
Distributed Systems & Cloud Infrastructure: Strong foundation in cloud architectures (e.g., AWS), distributed data stores (SQL/NoSQL), event-driven architectures, caching strategies, and REST/GraphQL API design.
-
Operational Excellence & Reliability: Extensive experience establishing CI/CD pipelines, automated testing strategies, production telemetry (metrics, logs, distributed tracing), and managing service reliability against strict SLIs/SLOs.
-
Technical Leadership & Scope: Demonstrated ability to lead high-ambiguity, multi-team technical initiatives, author comprehensive architectural RFCs, drive cross-functional alignment with Product and Design, and mentor senior engineers.
