Full job description

  • Provides technical assistance to individuals and organizations interested in identifying, documenting and preserving African American historic places through information about the agency’s historic preservation programs and research resources, and other organizations as appropriate.
  • Plans, implements and participates in outreach and research activities that promote South Carolina’s African American historic places, including publications, exhibits, presentations, and workshops.
  • Promotes the identification and documentation of African American historic places through historic property surveys, National Register of Historic Places nominations, and state historical marker applications.
  • Serves as liaison to the SC African American Heritage Commission, providing project, event and administrative support.

Bachelor’s degree in history, historic preservation, public history or related field, and experience in historical research, writing or a historic preservation field.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of African American history and culture.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of historic preservation.
  • Ability to conduct historical research in primary and secondary sources.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with the public and as an Archives and History team member. The position requires initiative, judgment, and tact.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle in South Carolina.
  • Willingness to learn new skills such as event and project management.
  • Knowledge of website maintenance and social media.

Master’s degree in history, historic preservation, public history or related field, and one year professional experience in public history, historic preservation, or related field. Knowledge of South Carolina history and Southern history. Position requires travel around the state, but overnight stays are generally not necessary. This is not a remote work position. Must have or be able to obtain a valid S.C. driver's license.
