Full job description

Description We are looking for a Staff Accountant to support a public-sector organization in South Carolina. This is a Long-term Contract position focused on strengthening core accounting operations, with particular emphasis on payroll, accounts payable, reconciliations, and month-end close activities. The role is well suited for an accounting specialist who can work confidently in a government and healthcare-related environment, bring structure to financial processes, and contribute strong Excel and technical accounting skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day payroll and accounts payable activities to help maintain accurate and timely financial operations.

  • Establish and improve month-end closing procedures, including the preparation of reconciliations and supporting schedules.

  • Prepare, review, and post complex journal entries while maintaining accuracy within the general ledger.

  • Perform bank reconciliations and balance sheet account reconciliations to ensure the integrity of financial records.

  • Support accounting operations within a modified cash environment and apply appropriate governmental accounting practices.

  • Assist with revenue distribution activities and related financial tracking as needed.

  • Develop and enhance Excel-based reports, worksheets, and data tools to improve visibility and efficiency across accounting processes.

  • Contribute to accounting support within a shared services structure serving multiple state agency functions.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to maintain organized documentation and support audit readiness, compliance, and reporting needs. Requirements

  • Experience in staff or senior accountant roles with hands-on responsibility for payroll, accounts payable, and general ledger activity.

  • Strong knowledge of journal entries, bank reconciliations, and balance sheet account reconciliation.

  • Background in governmental accounting, including experience with state or county government environments.

  • Familiarity with healthcare-related finance operations is highly preferred.

  • Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to build and maintain useful reporting tools and data-driven workbooks.

  • Ability to work effectively in a modified cash accounting environment.

  • Experience supporting audits, compliance requirements, or government-related financial reporting is preferred.

  • Comfortable handling technical accounting work and large-volume or complex financial entries with accuracy.
