Full job description
Description
Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
As a System Development Engineer III at Amazon Leo Global Business & Customer Operations ASTRA team (Agentic Surfaces, Tools & Resource Access), you will own platform reliability and security architecture for ASTRA's data and agentic surfaces. You will ensure our surfaces run reliably in production and makes governed, least-privilege access real as we extend GenAI across the Leo business including into government (ALG) use cases. This is a high-ownership role: you will both operate the systems and author the security architecture behind them. You will design and implement resilient, scalable systems while driving test automation and business process improvements that reduce complexity and harness Amazon AI tech to eliminate repetitive work. Your technical expertise will directly shape how teams build & operate systems that our customers and leadership depend on and your strategic thinking will ensure those systems are ready for what comes next.
Key job responsibilities
-
Design technology solutions and architectures that solve complex business and technical problems, decomposing hard challenges into components that can be delivered incrementally by you and your teammates.
-
Define and implement engineering best practices and operational-excellence standards, leading architecture, design, and operational readiness reviews plus post-incident analyses.
-
Own the reliability standard for Weekly Business Review (WBR) data: alerting, escalation, freshness validation, and pre-review availability SLAs.
-
Build and operate deployment pipelines for skills, agents, and services, including version sets, automated release and pickup, and rollback.
-
Harden and operate MCP servers and agentic surfaces: monitoring, runbooks, on-call readiness, and incident response.
-
Design and implement fine-grained authorization and least-privilege models for governed data access, moving beyond authentication-only patterns.
-
Build audit trails, permission boundaries, and secure-by-default patterns for agentic data access, including row/column-level controls for sensitive and government (ALG) data sharing.
-
Identify and drive automation that reduces operational burden, lowers cost, and improves resiliency.
-
Partner on Amazon Security Reviews and represent ASTRA's security posture to stakeholders.
-
Mentor engineers and produce exemplary artifacts: code, documentation, runbooks, and dashboards.
About the team
ASTRA builds the AI-powered tools, agentic interfaces, and data discovery surfaces that put trusted, governed data into the hands of every business operator across Amazon Leo. We own the "last mile" between data infrastructure, science models, and the business — and we are the vehicle extending GenAI across all of Leo Business.
