The Role: Data Center Civil Works Construction Manager
As a Data Center Civil Works Construction Manager at Switch, you will oversee civil construction activities for data center projects at the project site. You will represent Switch in the field and hold contractors accountable for safety, quality, schedule, approved drawings, specifications, and contract requirements. You will identify and resolve field issues while coordinating civil work with structural, MEP, architectural, utility, and commissioning teams. Your work will help ensure civil infrastructure is complete and ready to support data center installation, commissioning, and handover.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee day-to-day civil construction activities and contractor performance at the project site.
- Verify work complies with approved drawings, specifications, quality standards, project schedules, and contract requirements.
- Inspect excavation, foundations, reinforced concrete, paving, drainage, underground utilities, structural work, and other site development activities.
- Review contractor work plans, construction sequencing, resource allocation, shop drawings, material submittals, RFIs, and method statements.
- Resolve field engineering issues and make recommendations within approved project requirements.
- Monitor progress against the baseline schedule, identify potential delays, and work with contractors on mitigation plans.
- Review material testing, laboratory reports, inspections, and other quality records. Identify non-conforming work and confirm corrective actions are completed.
- Coordinate civil work with structural, MEP, architectural, utility, commissioning, and operations teams to prevent field conflicts.
- Verify underground civil utilities align with MEP equipment and installation requirements.
- Monitor contractor compliance with project health, safety, and environmental requirements and report unsafe conditions.
- Review contractor progress to support payment application verification.
- Maintain clear site records, progress reports, inspection documentation, punch lists, NCRs, and other required project records.
- Review as-built drawings and verify civil work is ready for commissioning, final inspection, and project handover.
What We’re Looking For
- You make sound field decisions based on approved plans, specifications, safety requirements, and project priorities.
- You communicate issues, decisions, risks, and required actions clearly and directly.
- You identify construction problems early and bring practical solutions forward.
- You follow through on inspections, corrective actions, documentation, and contractor commitments.
- You work effectively across civil, structural, MEP, utility, commissioning, and operations teams.
- You maintain high standards for safety and quality in an active mission-critical construction environment.
- You can balance schedule needs with quality, safety, and technical requirements without lowering project standards.
What You’ll Bring
- 10–15 years of civil construction experience, including responsibility for complex field execution, contractor oversight, or construction management.
- Experience delivering mission-critical facilities, data centers, or similarly complex construction projects.
- Strong working knowledge of reinforced concrete, foundations, earthwork, grading, underground utilities, drainage, stormwater systems, paving, and site development.
- Experience reading and applying engineering drawings, specifications, contract documents, and applicable building codes.
- Experience with construction scheduling, progress monitoring, quality control, inspections, and construction documentation.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam Revu, and Procore.
- Ability to work full time at an active construction site, including frequent walking, required PPE, outdoor conditions, and extended hours when project milestones require them.
- Experience with hyperscale, colocation, Tier III, or Tier IV data center construction is preferred.
- Experience with deep foundations, equipment pads, utility corridors, and heavy-duty concrete slabs is preferred.
- Experience coordinating civil construction with MEP installation and commissioning is preferred.
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, PE registration, AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, or BIM platform experience is helpful but not required.
