Full job description

Quantum Computer Deployment Physicist - 1100 We are seeking a Quantum Computer Deployment Physicist based out of one of our US Quantinuum offices or remotely where business requirements allow to install and service Helios systems worldwide. Helios is our current-generation quantum computer with 98 physical qubits and >99.9% two-qubit fidelities that is available through the cloud. Installation of on-premises units are already planned for Singapore and Oracle. This role offers the opportunity to work remotely from an approved location. The successful candidate may be based at any US Quantinuum office or work remotely where business requirements allow, while traveling extensively to Quantinuum facilities and customer locations worldwide in support of quantum system deployments. To develop deep familiarity with Helios hardware and software, the candidate will participate in system integration, validation, commissioning, and shipment-readiness activities across Quantinuum sites, both in person and remotely as required. As a key member of the deployment organization, they will then focus on critical installation, commissioning, validation, and acceptance activities at customer facilities, serving as a technical authority for quantum system performance during deployment. Working alongside experts in atomic physics, hardware, software, controls, lasers, cryogenics, and systems engineering, they will help deliver some of the world's most advanced quantum computers into operational customer environments. Beyond Helios, the candidate will play an important role in shaping Quantinuum's future on-premises quantum computing offerings by contributing deployment experience, field feedback, and technical expertise to the design, execution, serviceability, and scalability of next-generation systems. This role includes extensive international travel supporting major customer deployments and business-critical installations worldwide. Deployment assignments may involve extended on-site presence, typically ranging from several weeks to multiple months, with remote or office-based work between deployments. Outside active deployment windows, travel is expected to be approximately 25%, depending on program needs, training, customer support, and future installation planning. All applicants for placement in safety-sensitive positions will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug test. ### Key Responsibilities: - Prepare Helios systems for shipment, relocation, installation, bring-up, validation, and customer acceptance. - Serve as the deployment team's subject matter expert for atomic physics, trapped-ion operations, and qubit performance, providing technical leadership during critical integration and validation activities. - Own deployment success criteria related to quantum system performance, validation, verification, and customer acceptance testing. - Diagnose and resolve complex issues spanning quantum hardware, controls, software, optics, vacuum systems, electronics, and supporting infrastructure. - Lead technical decision-making during high-pressure integration and validation windows at Quantinuum and customer sites. - Participate in integration and validation of Helios systems at Quantinuum prior to deployment. - Provide remote support and on-site service for deployed Helios systems with the support of subject matter experts and a global technical team. - Train internal team members and, where appropriate, customer-side personnel on deployment processes, validation workflows, operational readiness, and best practices. - Improve and mature deployment plans, standard work, work instructions, test plans, troubleshooting guides, configuration documentation, and validation processes. - Partner with internal engineering, product, operations, and service teams to translate field lessons learned into future product and deployment improvements. - Contribute to future on-premises hardw re offerings beyond Helios, including design-for-deployment, execution planning, commissioning strategy, and serviceability improvements. - Maintain strong focus on business success, technical progress, customer outcomes, safety, documentation discipline, and professional collaboration. ### YOU MUST HAVE: - Ph.D. required - 7+ years of relevant post-graduate experience, inclusive of M.S. or Ph.D. experience, as a technical contributor or leader in atomic physics, trapped-ion systems, quantum computing, advanced experimental physics, or a related technical discipline. - Will be required to complete international travel, including extended customer-site deployments. - Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or green card holder, or worker granted asylum or refugee status. - Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen. ### WE VALUE: - A deep knowledge of trapped-ion-based technology, high-performance quantum computing, and technical hardware?integration and validation - Ability to work effectively across global teams, customer sites, laboratory environments, and deployment settings. - A proven track record of atomic physics research and development as evidenced by scholarly publications, successful program execution, and/or launched products - Experience with lasers, laser cooling, atom trapping, cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum systems, analog and digital electronics, laboratory hardware control, Python, physical modelling, and data analysis - A strong drive to exceed performance and schedule expectations - Commitment to documenting work via shared note taking as well as the creation and maintenance of standard work documentation, test plans, troubleshooting guides, and configuration documentation - Strong communication and collaboration skills This position is Bonus and Equity Eligible The base pay range for this role is $159,000 -- $214,000 annually.
