Full job description

Our client is seeking a Performance Engineer to join the thinkorswim® Performance Engineering team. As a Performance Engineer, you will be an individual contributor who independently plans and delivers performance and resiliency initiatives for a Java-based trading platform, with a focus on latency, scalability, reliability, and resiliency. If you enjoy turning production signals into actionable engineering improvements, this role is built for you.

Location: Southlake, TX (Ann Arbor, MI is a backup option)

Pay Range: $65-$68/hr

What's the Job?

  • Independently plan and deliver performance, scalability, resiliency, and capacity validation for assigned systems.

  • Learn architecture, business flows, dependencies, workloads, and production behavior to establish a strong baseline for testing and recommendations.

  • Define requirements, workloads, acceptance criteria, and reporting with partner teams to ensure measurable outcomes.

  • Build performance test scripts, workload generators, mock services, frameworks, and automation; execute load, stress, endurance, scalability, failover, recovery, degradation, and resiliency tests.

  • Analyze source code, JVM behavior, system resources, databases, networks, logs, metrics, and end-to-end latency; recommend and validate improvements across code, configuration, capacity, design, and resiliency patterns (e.g., CircuitBreakers, Shapers, LoadBalancers & Failover).

What's Needed?

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience in performance, scalability, software engineering, or production performance analysis.

  • Strong experience with performance, scalability, failover, recovery, and resiliency testing.

  • At least 2 years of hands-on Java development experience, with deep Core Java knowledge (JVM internals, concurrency, multithreading, memory, garbage collection, and latency).

  • Ability to read source code and diagnose bottlenecks using dumps, logs, profilers, metrics, and observability tools; experience building workload generators/utilities/automation with Java, Scala, Python, shell, JMeter, Gatling, or similar tools.

  • Collaborate with partner teams to communicate results, risks, recommendations, and open issues clearly.
