About Us

Wellington Management offers comprehensive investment management capabilities that span nearly all segments of the global capital markets. Our investment solutions, tailored to the unique return and risk objectives of institutional clients in more than 60 countries, draw on a robust body of proprietary research and a collaborative culture that encourages independent thought and healthy debate. As a private partnership, we believe our ownership structure fosters a long-term view that aligns our perspectives with those of our clients.

About the Role

Overview

Manager — Portfolio Implementation Technology

At Wellington Management, technology is central to how we invest. Our Portfolio Implementation Technology team builds systems that translate investment decisions into action across global markets. You'll lead a team working on a platform that's proven and mission critical. We're looking for managers who want ownership, stay close to technology, and are drawn to challenges critical to the business.

JOB OVERVIEW

As a Software Engineering Manager on the Portfolio Implementation Technology team, you'll lead a team of engineers who design, build, and support the systems that implement investment decisions. You are accountable for both the people and the platform: growing engineers, developing future leaders, setting technical direction, partnering directly with the investment teams we serve, and making sure a mission-critical system stays stable and keeps getting better.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead and grow the team

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of software engineers: hiring, onboarding, career growth, feedback, and performance

  • Identify and develop future leaders; Create stretch opportunities and build succession depth so the leadership bench grows alongside the team

  • Achieve delivery excellence with high engagement from team members, and measure success by vision alignment, supply chain partnership, and strong ROI

  • Absorb ambiguity and pressure on behalf of the team, so engineers can stay focused on the work rather than the noise around it

  • Build a high-performance team culture: standards paired with trust, candor, and room for levity

  • Connect people across teams and functions, making sure the right conversations happen without waiting for an org chart to allow them

Set and steward technical direction

  • Build architecture and technical decisions for your team's systems, empowering engineers to own outcomes while balancing near-term delivery against long-term platform health

  • Hold a high bar for API and interface design, service boundaries, and the contracts other teams depend on

  • Bring strategic ideas forward: identify where the platform should go next and build the case for it, not just the roadmap you were handed

  • Stay close enough to the code and the systems to make informed decisions and to be credible with your engineers

Plan and deliver

  • Plan carefully and realistically: scope, sequence, dependencies, and capacity, with an honest view of risk

  • Improve how the team works: sharpen processes, remove friction, and introduce practices that make delivery faster and more predictable

  • Be resourceful when the standard path doesn't exist; Find the pragmatic way through, and let the team see you do it

Partner across the business

  • Build close rapport with investment professionals, and cross-functional product-driven teams to achieve meaningful business outcome

  • Develop real fluency in the investment and trading domain, translate business intent into technical direction, and push back credibly when needed

  • Turn business needs into clear requirements, specifications, and test plans, and keep stakeholders informed through delivery

Own quality and production stability

  • Champion quality engineering: test strategy, automation, and the practices that catch problems before clients do

  • Lead incident response with a hands-on approach to triage, and make sure the follow-through changes the system

  • Treat continuous improvement as part of the operating rhythm, not a cleanup project

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. 8+ years designing and developing durable, impactful software solutions, including 2+ years leading or managing engineers, with hands-on experience applying AI-driven agentic engineering practices

  2. A track record of shipping in production with successful adoption

  3. Strong technical depth across the full stack and at the platform level, with strength in system and API design

  4. Comfortable with SDLC tools such as issue tracking (JIRA), source code management (Git), CI/CD (Jenkins / GitHub Actions), IDEs (VS Code / IntelliJ / Eclipse), AI tools (Claude Code / GitHub Copilot), cloud platforms (AWS / Azure), languages (Java / Python / TypeScript), and databases (Oracle / Postgres)

  5. Excellent communication and stakeholder management, with the judgment to work independently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

  6. Demonstrated ability to build resilient team, to influence without authority and to manage change across the organization

  7. Experience in asset management, trading, or another financial services domain, or a demonstrated ability to learn a complex domain quickly

  8. Experience introducing process or tooling changes that measurably improved delivery speed or quality

Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications? That’s ok. If you believe that you could excel in this role, we encourage you to apply and welcome a chance to review your background. We are dedicated to building and maintaining a diversified workforce and considering a broad array of candidates with a variety of skill, workplace experiences, and backgrounds.
