Full job description
The Department of Pathology at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for an academically oriented faculty member to serve as Associate Medical Director of the Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine (BBTM) Service at the UVA University Hospital and the Medical Director of the Blood Banks at the UVA Community Health Hospitals. This is a tenure-optional position with open academic rank, as commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Clinical responsibilities include participation in Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine call coverage and oversight and review of cellular therapy collections. Therapeutic apheresis procedures are managed by the Nephrology service and are not part of call coverage. Additional responsibilities include teaching and mentorship, with a primary focus on Pathology residents and BBTM fellows, as well as participation in collaborative and/or independent research activities. A strong interest in resident education and academic engagement is highly desirable.
The BBTM team at the University of Virginia Health System is part of an integrated Department of Pathology https://med.virginia.edu/pathology/ with successful programs in Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and a vibrant educational program for medical students, residents, and fellows, including an ACGME-accredited fellowship program in BBTM.
The University of Virginia Health System includes level 1 Trauma Center, Solid Organ transplant service, a vibrant hematology / oncology program, including a robust and growing hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant program.

Interested candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or DO degree; have appropriate residency experience; and possess the relevant American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) certification. Candidates must be BBTM board-certified or board eligible through the American Board of Pathology (ABP).
