Full job description

At Boom we are developing Symphony — the engine that will power Overture, the world's fastest airliner and Superpower, the natural gas turbine and revenue engine that fuels our endeavors while unblocking next-gen AI data centers. We are building it in Denver, at a pace and cost point the industry says is impossible, because the industry has forgotten what's possible.

We are looking for a Principal Manufacturing Engineer with deep hands-on expertise in CNC machining complex turbomachinery components, including blisks, airfoils, and other difficult aerospace hardware. You will own the process from model and drawing through production—developing the machining strategy, designing workholding, selecting tooling, programming, proving out the process, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing for reliable production.

Build the parts that other people struggle to make. What You'll Do

  • Develop and own CNC machining processes for blisks, airfoils, and complex turbomachinery components.
  • Program advanced 5-axis machining using high-end CAM software.
  • Develop toolpaths, tooling strategies, fixtures, posts, macros, and probing routines.
  • Set up and prove out difficult processes directly on the machine.
  • Diagnose and resolve problems involving the program, tooling, fixture, machine, material, or cutting conditions.
  • Machine challenging materials including Inconel, nickel-based superalloys, titanium, and other difficult alloys.
  • Optimize cycle time, tool life, process capability, and machine utilization.
  • Engineer processes for reliable, lights-out machining.
  • Train and mentor engineers, programmers, machinists, and operators.
  • Lead technically challenging projects.

What Sets You Apart

  • You understand the machining physics behind chatter, tool failure, deflection, part movement, and dimensional instability, and can identify and correct the root cause.
  • You've made parts others couldn't make. You can machine thin airfoils in nickel or titanium without unacceptable chatter or deflection, establish predictable tool life, and find significant cycle-time improvements in highly optimized processes.
  • When standard CAM capabilities aren't enough, you can develop the post, macro, probing strategy, or toolpath required to get the job done.

What You Bring

  • Expert-level CNC programming experience with at least one high-end CAM system.
  • Deep knowledge of CNC machines, controls, posts, macros, probing, and machine behavior.
  • Significant experience machining blisks, airfoils, impellers, bladed components, or other complex turbomachinery hardware.
  • Extensive production experience with Inconel, nickel-based superalloys, titanium, or similar materials.
  • Strong knowledge of tooling, workholding, cutting conditions, tool life, chatter, deflection, and process stability.
  • Proven ability to take complex processes from development through production.
  • Ability to work across different CAM systems, machine brands, and controls.
  • Ability to clearly explain technical decisions and teach others.

This Is a Principal-Level Role. You'll be the technical expert people call when the normal answers don't work. You'll lead the hardest machining challenges, establish processes others can follow, and raise the technical capability of the organization. If you can take a difficult blisk or airfoil from print to proven production process, we want to talk to you.
