Assistant Professor – Substance Use - Psychology (Tenure-Track)

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Psychology at the City College of New York (CCNY) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in substance use at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2027. The CCNY Psychology Department is a vibrant, diverse department located in Harlem, serving over 2000 undergraduate majors, with master’s programs in General Psychology and Mental Health Counseling. Over 200 students participate in our Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) program, which provides the educational and practicum hours required for certification as a substance use counselor by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). The department offers an APA-accredited doctoral program in Clinical Psychology; faculty also participate in Ph.D. programs in Neuroscience and Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center, and the M.S. program in Cognitive Neuroscience.

We seek a scientist investigating basic or translational mechanisms underpinning substance use and/or the treatment of substance use and misuse. The specific area of research is open, but can include neuroimaging, therapeutics, technology-based interventions, translational neuroscience, and implementation science. With this hire, we seek to build on the Psychology Department’s existing strengths in clinical and translational research in substance use.

The department maintains strong affiliations with the Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI), a state-of-the-art research facility designed to foster interdisciplinary research, with imaging core and behavioral testing space shared with its twin building, the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), which manages a dedicated neuroscience initiative that includes a 3T MRI scanner on campus. Opportunities for research collaborations exist at the Grove School of Engineering, CUNY School of Medicine and the U54 partnership between CCNY and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, plus additional intramural programs. Successful applicants are expected to maintain an active program of research, obtain external grant support, publish theoretical and empirical research in top-tier journals, be committed to both undergraduate and graduate education, and provide mentoring to students. The position will include teaching, research, mentorship, and departmental service, including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Ph.D. in psychology, neuroscience, clinical psychology, public health, or a similarly allied field is required.

Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in providing mentoring/advisement to neuroscience students.

The candidate is expected to maintain an active program of research, publish theoretical and empirical research in top-tier journals, be committed to both undergraduate and graduate education, and provide mentoring/advisement to students.

Potential for obtaining external grant support.

COMPENSATION

Assistant Professor: $79,630 - $94,017

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs.
