Job Summary Performs duties necessary to treat patients in accordance with the physician’s order and departmental policy. Works independently in all acute and critical care settings. Consults with physicians and other personnel and makes recommendations on treatment as appropriate.

Job Description

Essential Functions

  • All team members are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Prisma Health's purpose: Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference.

  • Performs respiratory therapy general and critical care procedures in accordance with the physician’s order, departmental policy, and Respiratory Care guidelines or protocols.

  • Initiates, monitors and manages patients requiring all types of invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.

  • Initiates and manages all types of airways and associated equipment.

  • Obtains blood gasses from all sites. Analyzes and reports results accurately.

  • Accurately and completely documents and charges for all respiratory care procedures and tasks and provides patient and family education as appropriate.

  • Communicates with all members of the healthcare team to include students and nurse shadows. Provides an accurate and complete report. Makes recommendations as appropriate. Communicates well with supervisors, coordinators, or those acting in lieu of the above.

  • Adheres to infection control and quality initiatives. Performs appropriate cleaning/disinfection of equipment between patients as indicated by equipment type and isolation status.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Associate degree. Graduate of a Respiratory Care Program by an accredited school

  • Experience - No experience required.

In Lieu Of

  • In lieu of education and experience noted above, a diploma and/or equivalent experience may be considered.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • Respiratory Care Practitioner - Temporary license in state in which work is performed.

  • Full Respiratory Therapist Certification including Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from NBRC must be obtained within six (6) months of hire

  • BLS

  • NRP, PALS, ACLS, NPS etc. must obtain and maintain certifications as required by work unit.

​ Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skills necessary to treat patients of all ages to include infants, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

  • Ability to obtain blood gasses from all sites.
