This role combines metallurgical expertise with hands-on manufacturing support, quality assurance, customer collaboration, and continuous improvement. Working closely with operations, engineering, quality, and commercial teams, the Metallurgical Engineer will help resolve technical challenges, enhance production processes, improve material performance, and ensure finished products meet demanding customer specifications and industry standards.
The ideal candidate is a technically driven problem-solver who enjoys working in both office and production settings and can translate metallurgical analysis into practical manufacturing solutions. This individual will play an important role in improving product quality, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
-
Support the development and improvement of metal alloys, casting processes, and finished-product quality.
-
Provide technical support for melting, centrifugal casting, heat treatment, and finishing operations.
-
Review and interpret customer specifications, purchase orders, material requirements, and other technical documentation to ensure manufacturing compliance.
-
Analyze metallurgical data, material microstructures, mechanical properties, and test results to evaluate product performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
-
Investigate manufacturing and quality issues using root cause analysis and corrective action methodologies.
-
Collaborate with operations, engineering, quality, sales, and customers to resolve technical concerns and develop effective solutions.
-
Prepare metallurgical reports, material certifications, technical documentation, and customer-related deliverables.
-
Lead and support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, delivery performance, and cost reduction.
-
Participate in alloy development, process improvement, and manufacturing optimization projects.
-
Provide technical guidance to production teams to support process consistency, product integrity, and adherence to established standards.
-
Help implement and sustain process controls that improve manufacturing reliability and product performance.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
-
At least two years of experience in a foundry, casting operation, metals manufacturing facility, or a related industrial environment.
-
Strong foundational knowledge of metallurgy, materials science, alloy properties, and manufacturing processes.
-
Working knowledge of casting methods and associated metallurgical principles.
-
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate complex technical issues.
-
Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings and collaborate directly with customers.
-
Demonstrated initiative, accountability, organization, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
-
Ability to work effectively in both office and production environments, including regular interaction with manufacturing operations.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience supporting centrifugal casting processes.
-
Familiarity with Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) processing.
-
Additional experience in foundry operations, casting, metals production, or other industrial manufacturing environments.
-
Knowledge of stainless steel, nickel-based, cobalt-based, and copper-based alloys.
-
Experience with metallurgical testing, materials characterization, quality management systems, and failure analysis.
-
Background in high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environments.
-
Master's degree, Ph.D., or advanced coursework in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will combine strong metallurgical fundamentals with practical manufacturing experience and a continuous improvement mindset. They will be comfortable analyzing technical data, working directly with production teams, addressing quality concerns, and communicating findings to internal stakeholders and customers. A proactive approach to problem-solving, attention to detail, and a commitment to product quality and operational excellence will be essential to success in this role.
