Full job description

Our company

At Teradata, we believe that people thrive when empowered with better information. Teradata Autonomous Knowledge Platform activates enterprise intelligence by unifying data, knowledge and business context to achieve tangible outcomes. With Teradata, organizations can provide agents with full context for impact when it matters. Our solution lets businesses connect and scale on premises, in the cloud, or through a hybrid approach. Teradata delivers real business value with AI.

What You'll Do

  • Own the end-to-end architecture of the Teradata Hardware platforms and set the technical roadmap across compute, memory, storage, networking, firmware, and system packaging.

  • Act as design authority for future platform generations, making and documenting key trade-offs among performance, density, reliability, serviceability, and total cost of ownership.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies (new CPU generations, memory and storage media, networking fabrics, GPUs, DPUs, and accelerators) through hands-on analysis, prototyping, and benchmarking, and recommend what to adopt.

  • Partner with Database Engineering and Product Management to turn database and workload requirements into hardware capabilities, and explain how hardware choices affect query performance and reliability.

  • Lead technical reviews across hardware, firmware, storage, and system integration teams, setting the bar for design quality without direct management authority.

  • Guide platform quality across the lifecycle, including design validation, integration and system testing, manufacturing readiness, and root-cause analysis of field failures.

  • Serve as the technical counterpart to key hardware vendors and manufacturing partners on roadmap, specifications, and issue resolution, and as the senior technical voice on platform capabilities, sizing, and deployment in strategic customer and field engagements.

  • Mentor engineers and architects, grow architectural practices and documentation across the organization, and brief executives and customers on how the platform evolved from dedicated appliances to the unified IntelliFlex architecture.

Who You'll Work With

You will serve as lead architect for the Teradata Hardware platform, working across hardware, firmware, storage, and system integration teams without direct management authority. You will work most closely with Database Engineering and Product Management on workload requirements, with key hardware vendors and manufacturing partners on roadmap and issue resolution, and with field and customer teams on strategic engagements.

What Makes You a Qualified Candidate

Required

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 15+ years in hardware, systems, or platform architecture, with a record of technical leadership at a principal, distinguished, or director level as an individual contributor.

  • Deep expertise in enterprise server architecture, including CPUs, memory, storage, networking, BIOS/firmware, and remote management (BMC).

  • Experience with MPP, data warehouse, or other distributed database platforms, and a clear view of how hardware design drives performance and reliability.

  • Proven ability to architect and deliver multiple generations of an enterprise hardware product from concept through manufacturing and field support.

Preferred

  • Preferred: Familiarity with Linux-based platforms and virtualization, and with how on-prem hardware coexists with virtualized and cloud deployments.

What You'll Bring

  • The ability to align cross-functional teams and senior leaders on technical direction without formal reporting lines.

  • The authority that comes from knowing how the product works, how it has evolved, and where it should go next.

  • Skill as a technical storyteller: you can present architecture and product history to engineers, executives, and customers, and use that history to guide design decisions and onboard engineers.

  • Discipline in documenting architectural trade-offs so that design decisions remain explainable across platform generations.

  • A commitment to mentoring engineers and architects and raising the architectural bar across the organization.
