Material Handler – Job Description

Position Overview

The Material Handler is responsible for organizing daily shipping operations, preparing materials for shipment, and supporting production through accurate handling, movement, and processing of materials. This role requires strong attention to detail, safe operation of equipment, and the ability to maintain an efficient and orderly shipping environment.

Key Responsibilities

Shipping & Receiving

  • Organize the shipping floor and stage daily outbound shipments.

  • Package materials according to company and customer specifications.

  • Prepare orders for shipment, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

  • Attach packing slips, certifications, and required documentation.

  • Weigh and measure materials to verify shipping requirements.

  • Return unprocessed or unused materials to inventory.

Material Handling & Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate forklifts to move, load, and unload materials.

  • Use lifting equipment such as hoists, pallet jacks, and cranes.

  • Maintain accurate material transactions and location updates in the operating system.

  • Set up and operate metal cutting machinery.

  • Run bandsaws and other cutting equipment as needed.

Inventory & Documentation

  • Track material movement and maintain accurate inventory records.

  • Ensure proper labeling, documentation, and traceability of materials.

  • Support cycle counts and inventory audits when required.

Workplace Maintenance

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shipping and production area.

  • Perform housekeeping tasks including sweeping, debris removal, and general upkeep.

Qualifications

  • Experience in material handling, shipping/receiving, or warehouse operations preferred.

  • Forklift operation experience required; certification preferred.

  • Ability to lift, move, and handle materials safely.

  • Basic computer skills for inventory and transaction entry.

  • Experience with metal cutting machinery or bandsaws is a plus.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.

  • CDL (not required but valued) for occasional transportation needs.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, lift, bend, and move materials throughout the shift.

  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing or warehouse environment.
