Full job description

Meet the Team

The Splunk Metadata Catalog (MDC) team is part of the core Splunk Platform organization. We are building a high-scale Knowledge Graph that empowers Splunk users to discover data assets effortlessly, map complex relationships, and trace data lineage across diverse ecosystems.

You will join a fast-paced, high-impact team pioneering foundational technology central to the Cisco Data Fabric strategy. As a Senior Engineer, you will shape architectural decisions and build systems that scale across enterprise-grade data platforms.

Your impact

As a Senior Software Engineer on the team, you will:

  • End-to-End Feature Delivery: own development, and implementation of complex, high-impact features and microservices within the Metadata Catalog platform.

  • Collaborate on System Architecture: Partner with Technical Leaders and Architects to translate product requirements into modular, scalable, and resilient distributed components.

  • Build for Scale & High Performance: optimize robust, low-latency applications capable of managing large-scale graph relationships and data lineage queries.

  • Drive Quality & Engineering Excellence: Champion a Developer Owned Quality mindset within the team by authoring comprehensive unit, integration, and performance tests to ensure high product reliability.

  • Operational & Production Ownership: Take active ownership of services in production-monitoring service health, debugging complex distributed issues, participating in on-call rotations, and driving post-incident reviews.

  • Technical Mentorship & Collaboration: Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through detailed code reviews and design discussions, fostering continuous learning and engineering rigor across the team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & experience: Bachelor's in computer science / related field + 6 years of related experience, or Masters + 3 years of related experience

  • Software Development & Debugging: Strong hands-on proficiency in an object-oriented or systems language (such as Go, Java, or C++), with proven experience designing, developing, and debugging production-grade services.

  • Cloud & Container Technologies: Demonstrated experience building and operating cloud-native microservices using AWS, Azure, or GCP, alongside containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Distributed Systems Foundations: Solid grasp of algorithms, data structures, concurrency, distributed systems architecture, and RESTful / gRPC API design.

  • CI/CD & Agile Rigor: Proven background delivering software in fast-paced Agile environments with automated testing and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.

  • Reliability & Performance Focus: Track record of diagnosing and solving performance bottlenecks and ensuring high availability in distributed environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graph Databases & Technologies: Hands-on experience with graph databases (e.g., Neo4j, AWS Neptune, Apache AGE) and query languages/frameworks (e.g., Cypher, Gremlin, GraphQL).

  • Data Lineage & Metadata: Experience with metadata catalogs, data governance frameworks, schema registries, or knowledge graph platforms.

  • Event Streaming: Familiarity with distributed message brokers and streaming platforms (e.g., Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ).

  • Observability: Experience instrumenting services with observability metrics, distributed tracing, and logging frameworks (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Splunk).

  • Collaboration & Adaptability: Strong communication skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across distributed global engineering teams in an evolving technical landscape.
