Job Description:

About the Role:

Step into the front lines of critical care at the UF Small Animal Hospital! As an ECC ICU & ER Veterinary Technician, you’ll be part of a fast-paced, high-impact team providing hands-on care to our most critical patients – from ventilated cases and seizures to open-heart surgeries and acute kidney crises.

As our service continues to grow, now offering more advanced treatments such as dialysis and post op care for our open-heart program, we are excited to offer multiple full-time opportunities for both day and overnight shifts. These roles follow a compressed schedule of three 13-hour shifts per week (totaling 40 hours), with shift options from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM or 6:00 PM to 8:00 AM. While scheduling is flexible and negotiable, at least one shift will likely include partial weekend coverage.

This role is perfect for someone who thrives under pressure, has a strong work ethic, and is energized by the dynamic nature of emergency and intensive care. You’ll rotate through the ER, triaging and stabilizing walk-in patients while collaborating closely with clinicians and fellow technicians. If you’re someone who brings reliability, compassion, and a love for the adrenaline of ECC, we’d love to meet you!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer treatments and monitor hospitalized critical patients in the ICU.

  • Rotate into the ER to triage, stabilize, and assist in diagnostic procedures, surgeries, ultrasounds, radiographs, and lab submissions.

  • Perform patient discharges and documentation, including charges and handovers.

  • Support clinicians in all aspects of patient stabilization, including anesthesia and critical interventions.

  • Mentor and guide veterinary students and house officers in ECC best practices.

  • Ensure charges have been made for each patient

  • Perform procedures (cystocentesis, ultrasound, place central lines, nasogastric feeding tubes etc.)

Why work at UF?

Imagine being part of a team that isn’t just providing care — but defining what exceptional veterinary medicine looks like. At UF Small Animal Hospital, you’ll join a forever evolving ECC service, where innovation, adaptability, and curiosity are celebrated. This is a place for individuals who want to share their knowledge, learn from others, and help us continue to be the best ECC team in the world.

Our department is VECCS-accredited, and our hospital holds AAHA accreditation, reflecting our unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care. Our technicians aren’t just supporting care — they’re shaping it. You’ll be part of a teaching hospital that empowers staff to mentor students, support residents, and pursue credentials like CVT, VTS and more. Your expertise, insight, and curiosity are not only welcomed, but they are also encouraged.

Outside the hospital, Gainesville and the surrounding areas offer the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. Swim in natural springs, explore beautiful parks and lakes, enjoy a vibrant local food scene, or take short trips to Florida’s award-winning beaches and cultural attractions.
