Full job description

Overview

The SCORE team builds the AI-powered experience that helps customers discover tax savings they would otherwise miss. We work at the application layer of AI: turning large language models, agentic workflows, and customer data into recommendations that are accurate, explainable, and useful at the moment someone is preparing their taxes.

We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to serve as a technical leader on SCORE. You’ll own the architecture and delivery of core savings discovery capabilities, set technical direction across multiple workstreams, and raise the engineering bar for how we build production AI in a domain where correctness matters. This is a hands-on role: you’ll write code, make the hard design calls, and mentor engineers, while partnering closely with product, design, tax experts, data science, and platform teams to ship AI experiences that are fast, reliable, and trustworthy.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical strategy and architecture for SCORE, including LLM-backed discovery, agentic and orchestration flows, and the logic that decides what is deterministic versus what is left to model judgment.

  • Lead design and delivery of complex, cross-team initiatives from ambiguous problem statements through production launch and iteration.

  • Write, review, and elevate the quality of production code across services and application logic; set patterns others build on.

  • Establish best practices for building with LLMs in production: prompt and context design, latency and cost management, guardrails, and quality measurement.

  • Define how we evaluate correctness, including expert-graded rubrics, automated evals, and clear correctness dimensions that tie model output to tax accuracy.

  • Partner with product, design, and tax experts to turn customer needs into technical roadmaps, and with data science and platform teams on model serving, data, and infrastructure dependencies.

  • Identify and resolve reliability, performance, and scalability risks before they reach customers; contribute to incident response and operational excellence.

  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, and influence technical decisions and standards beyond your immediate team.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of leading the design and delivery of large-scale, high-impact systems.

  • Deep expertise in building and operating production services (strong proficiency in one or more of: Java, Scala, Python, or similar).

  • Experience building AI or ML-powered product features, ideally with LLMs, agentic systems, or retrieval.

  • Strong system design skills and the ability to make sound architecture decisions under ambiguity and competing constraints.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership: setting direction, driving cross-functional alignment, and mentoring engineers without relying on formal authority.

  • Experience with production concerns for AI systems: evaluation, latency and cost tradeoffs, monitoring, and quality and safety guardrails.

  • Comfort working in a high-accuracy domain, where outputs must be verifiable and wrong answers carry real consequences for customers. Experience with tax, finance, or other regulated domains is a plus.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical tradeoffs to both engineering and non-technical partners.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
