This role is primarily focused on outreach and engagement, acting as a bridge between the community and clinical services. The Recovery Support Specialist provides authentic peer support, advocacy, and navigation assistance to help clients overcome barriers to care.

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Share personal recovery stories in a professional and purposeful manner to build rapport and instill hope.

  • Distribute educational materials and represent the organization at community events to reduce stigma surrounding mental health treatment.

  • Provide one-on-one support to help clients navigate the intake and admission process for outpatient programs.

  • Accompany clients to initial appointments or community resources to provide emotional support and modeling of self-advocacy.

  • Help clients understand their rights within the behavioral health system.

  • Identify and help mitigate barriers to treatment, such as transportation issues, fear of clinical settings, or lack of documentation.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all outreach encounters and peer sessions.

  • Ensure all activities align with state regulatory standards (such as OMH or OASAS requirements).

  • Participate in staff meetings, clinical supervision, and ongoing professional development.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have personal lived experience with mental health challenges and/or substance use disorder and a commitment to personal recovery.

  • One of the following NYS certifications, strongly preferred:

  • NYCPS: New York Certified Peer Specialist

  • CRPA: Certified Recovery Peer Advocate

  • High school diploma or GED, preferred.

  • Familiarity with the NYS OMH and OASAS systems of care, trauma-informed care principles, and harm reduction strategies.
