About the Role

Robert Half is seeking a professional and detail-oriented Collections Specialist for a contract opportunity with a nonprofit organization in Madison, Connecticut. This position is ideal for an individual with strong customer service, accounts receivable, and collections experience who enjoys working in a mission-driven environment.

The Collections Specialist will be responsible for managing outstanding balances, communicating with clients and funding sources, resolving billing discrepancies, and supporting the organization's revenue cycle and cash flow operations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor accounts receivable aging reports and identify outstanding balances

  • Contact clients, funding sources, and third-party payers regarding overdue accounts through phone, email, and written correspondence

  • Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies, payment issues, and account disputes

  • Maintain detailed collection notes and account records within the billing system

  • Process account adjustments, payment arrangements, and account reconciliations as appropriate

  • Collaborate with accounting and program staff to resolve outstanding receivables

  • Track collection activities and prepare aging and collections reports for management

  • Research unapplied payments and resolve outstanding account issues

  • Assist with month-end accounts receivable reconciliations

  • Ensure collection efforts comply with organizational policies and applicable regulations

  • Support special projects and administrative functions as needed

Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred

  • 2+ years of collections, accounts receivable, customer service, or billing experience

  • Strong understanding of collections processes and accounts receivable functions

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting or billing software

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and customer service skills

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality when handling sensitive information

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a nonprofit, healthcare, social services, or community services environment

  • Familiarity with insurance billing, grant funding, or government-funded programs

  • Experience with account reconciliations and aging reports

  • Knowledge of revenue cycle processes and collections best practices

Schedule

  • Full-time, Monday through Friday

  • Standard business hours

  • Contract assignment with potential for extension based on organizational needs
