Job Title: Estimator Job Description

The Estimator performs detailed quantity takeoffs and prepares accurate cost estimates and budgets for residential, multifamily, and commercial construction projects. This role analyzes construction drawings and specifications, prices self-performed framing and carpentry scopes, and evaluates subcontractor and supplier proposals. The Estimator supports project handoff to operations, contributes to continuous improvement of estimating processes and tools, and consistently meets bid deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from construction drawings and specifications for residential, multifamily, and commercial projects.

  • Prepare complete and accurate estimates and budgets for a variety of construction projects.

  • Price self-performed framing and carpentry scopes, ensuring costs are realistic and competitive.

  • Coordinate wall panel takeoffs with the panel design team to ensure alignment between design and estimated quantities.

  • Review, analyze, and level subcontractor and supplier proposals to ensure completeness, accuracy, and consistency with project requirements.

  • Develop and maintain unit cost databases and assembly libraries to support consistent and efficient estimating.

  • Review plans and specifications to identify omissions, conflicts, and constructability concerns, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.

  • Assist with project handoff to operations and project management teams by providing clear and organized estimate documentation.

  • Support continuous improvement of estimating processes, tools, and systems to enhance accuracy and efficiency.

  • Manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Use estimating software, construction bidding tools, and blueprint reading skills to support all estimating activities.

  • Assist with preparation and evaluation of change orders as needed.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of experience performing construction takeoffs and/or estimating.

  • Proven ability to read and interpret complete construction drawing sets and specifications.

  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • At least 2 years of experience using Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Proficiency with construction estimation and bidding practices.

  • Ability to read and work from blueprints.

  • Familiarity with estimating software and related construction tools.

  • Understanding of change order processes in construction projects.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in quantity takeoffs and pricing.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with residential, multifamily, and commercial construction projects.

  • Exposure to self-performed framing and carpentry scopes.

  • Experience coordinating wall panel takeoffs with design teams.

  • Familiarity with Autocad or similar design tools.

  • Experience developing and maintaining unit cost databases and assembly libraries.

  • Interest in continuous improvement of estimating processes, tools, and systems.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills to support project handoffs and collaboration with operations and project management teams.

  • Willingness to pursue certifications and continuing education related to construction estimating and project delivery.

Work Environment

The role is based in an office setting in Helena with regular interaction at active construction sites. You will work in a professional office environment using tools such as Microsoft Office, estimating software, and blueprint reading tools, and may collaborate with teams using Autocad and other construction technologies. Site visits will expose you to typical construction conditions, including outdoor work areas, active trades, and varying weather. The position requires comfort working both at a desk and in the field, adapting to a mix of office-based analysis and on-site coordination.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Helena, MT.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $37.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
