Full job description

Your opportunity

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.

This is a meaningful opportunity for an experienced accounting professional to help oversee the accounting for Schwab’s investment securities portfolio and borrowing activities. As part of the Corporate Controller’s Department, the Bank Accounting team supports the close for three bank subsidiaries and two trust companies, helping deliver accurate financial information and strong control practices.

In this role, you will manage accounting, analysis, reporting, reconciliations, fair value assessments, system issue resolution, and testing while partnering closely with Treasury Capital Markets, Treasury Settlement Services, the Finance Innovation Team, Accounting Policy, and external software consultants. You will have the opportunity to solve complex accounting challenges, improve processes through technology and automation, and contribute to work that supports sound financial stewardship across Schwab.

You will join a collaborative, purpose-driven environment where integrity and service come first, teams succeed together as One Schwab, and employees are encouraged to own their tomorrow. This role offers broad exposure across Finance and Treasury, meaningful partnership with subject matter experts, and opportunities to strengthen your technical, leadership, and problem-solving capabilities.

What you’ll do

  • Manage accounting for the investment securities portfolio and borrowing activities across multiple legal entities, including the monthly close, journal entries, reconciliations, analysis, and reporting support.

  • Partner with Treasury and liquidity teams on new investment activities and funding initiatives, including repurchase agreements, FHLB and Federal Reserve funding sources, and other balance sheet management activities, to support appropriate accounting treatment and system readiness.

  • Review monthly close results, variance analyses, reconciliations, and schedules supporting financial, SEC, and regulatory reporting for investments and borrowings.

  • Maintain and adhere to SOX controls, lead discussions with the SOX compliance team, and participate in periodic internal audit reviews.

  • Work closely with technology teams to implement enhancements, improve processes, and expand automation opportunities.

  • Investigate and resolve reconciling items within the portfolios through thorough analysis and documentation.

  • Respond to inquiries from external auditors, SEC Reporting, and regulatory reporting teams regarding investment securities, borrowings, and related accounting matters.

  • Consult with the Accounting Policy team on accounting policies and practices related to investment securities, borrowings, and other treasury activities.

  • Lead or support strategic and ad hoc initiatives that strengthen controls, reporting, and operational effectiveness.

What you have

To ensure that we fulfill our promise of “challenging the status quo,” this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have.

Required qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance

  • 5+ years of accounting experience

  • Operational accounting and treasury systems experience in a high-transaction-volume environment

  • Solid proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel

  • Ability to communicate complex information in a concise and understandable manner

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects that vary in scope and complexity

Preferred qualifications :

  • CPA

  • Direct experience with investment securities and borrowing activities

  • Relevant banking, financial services, or treasury experience

  • Experience with Calypso Technology or a comparable treasury or capital markets platform

  • Experience with Alteryx, SQL, or similar data tools

Location & Work Arrangement: This hybrid role requires four days per week in the office and one remote workday. Candidates must live in, or be willing to relocate on their own to, the listed location.
